DVD Reviews of Saxondale - Complete Seasons 1 & 2

DVD Review: Unexpected recent favorite
Summary: 4 Stars

My girlfriend brought this over a few weeks after we'd watched Hamlet 2. I kindof groaned because I felt like Hamlet 2 was stupid mainstream Scary Movie-type crap. Devoid of subtlety.

But Saxondale is really clever and fun, and has one of the best title sequences ever. Too bad they edited that part down for the second season.

I really like the concept of a hardcore roadie who toured with all of the rock greats, now in his 50s and having to deal with the realities of a 9-5 job and suburban malaise. The characters all have endearing quirks and interesting relationships. It's definitely a good change of pace from American sitcoms.

DVD Review: Disk faulty, Amazon fantastic
Summary: 1 Stars

The dvd did not play and was returned to Amazon. The process was clear and easy. My refund was credited to my account swiftly. Very sad about Saxondale, very happy about Amazon!

DVD Review: Saxondale: Steve Coogan at his British Best
Summary: 5 Stars

Saxondale is hilarious, charming and witty. Anyone who is a fan of Steve Coogan's other shows like Knowing Me Knowing You with Alan Partridge will already know this. Coogan made an all too brief appearance in the Hollywood blockbuster hit "Tropic Thunder". It was just about the only funny moment in that train wreck of a movie, but it certainly was a hilarious turn.
Saxondale shows off Coogan's funniest and most human sides to date. This show would never air in America because the FCC has it's head up it's you know what. It is a BRITISH SHOW, yet anyone can relate to the frustrations and joys of Tommy Saxondale.
Buy this DVD and enjoy. Then you can show it to your friends and lovers and watch in amazement as they realize (finally) just what c cultured and well rounded person that you really are!

DVD Review: Simply Hilarious
Summary: 5 Stars

Coogan has done it again, in this very original suburban comedy. The rock humor and how he flip-flops or changes his belief system whenever it suits him is outstanding. The episodes with Coogan as the mod/emo kid Keanu Reeves are especially funny. What an original show!!

Description of Saxondale - Complete Seasons 1 & 2

Tommy Saxondale (Steve Coogan) was once a roadie for all the greats: Purple, Floyd, Genesis. Back then youth culture meant couter-culture, and refusing to conform to the suburban dream. Now Tommy's a pest controller in Stevenage and living in suburbia, but he's still railing against the system. Only these days the system means blokes in suits who listen to Dido. Following Tommy's hostile divorce, he met his soulmate in Magz (Ruth Jones), who runs "Samsh the System." That's her T-shirt shop that keeps the authority figures running scared, usually by selling images of them smoking a joint. Completing Tommy's surrogate family is his young lodger Raymond (Rasmus Hardiker), pest control trainee and uncomprehending disciple of Tommy's worldly wisdom. Being self educated, Tommy often feels that he's surrounded by idiots. Like when he has to visit Vicky (Morwenna Banks) who dispense work contracts and gross insult. Vicky is just one of the many reasons why Tommy's anger management therapy sessions won't be ending any time soon. Through it all, Tommy Saxondale is still the smartest and dumbest guy in the room.

With his full beard and belly, Steve Coogan (Tropic Thunder) is virtually unrecognizable as pest exterminator Tommy Saxondale. Then again, the former roadie can be a bit of a pest himself. His glory days behind him, the 50-year-old's life revolves around his job, his Mustang, and the anger management sessions that open each show. To kick-start the series, Saxondale hires Raymond (Rasmus Hardiker, an excellent foil), a rock-loving lad who reminds him of a younger version of himself, and persuades his new partner to move in with him and his old lady, Magz (Little Britain's Ruth Jones), who manages t-shirt emporium Smash the System. During his first season, Tommy reconnects with a decrepit crony from the roadie circuit, meets his daughter's slick new boyfriend, and comes perilously close to betraying Magz. As she tells Raymond about her blustery man, "He's actually got a really sensitive side. He was a mess the day Diana died." Clearly, these two Rush fans belong together. In the following season, the show welcomes yuppy neighbor Jonathon (Darren Boyd) and gay squatter "Keanu Reeves" (Coogan), who made his debut the year before.

Throughout both seasons, Tommy battles therapist Alistair (James Bachman) and office manager Vicky (Morwenna Banks), who may be his intellectual inferior, but bests him in the insult department. For fanciers of muscle cars and classic rock--the music and motoring references run rampant--Saxondale will go down like a shot of whiskey. If Tommy isn't as iconic as Coogan's chat-show host Alan Partridge, he's still a swell dude with which to pass the time. Coogan and co-writer Neil McLennan offer an interview and commentary on the episode "Suicide," in which Tommy saves the life of a food artist. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
