DVD Reviews of Samurai PrincessDVD Review: Cheesy, gory, hilarious and over the top! I loved it! Summary: 4 Stars
This is definitely an acquired taste for some people. Personally, I like this type of thing. It's almost like an adult version of POWER RANGERS mixed with a Troma film for good measure. Well, depending on how you look at it anyways. I'm sure that description makes it sound lame for some people but I don't care. At least it's honest. What you get in the end is basically a live action Anime made with zero budget. If anyone reading this review has seen MACHINE GIRL, TOKYO GORE POLICE, MEATBALL MACHINE, CLASS OF NUKE 'EM HIGH or TETSUO : IRON MAN, then your know what to expect with SAMURAI PRINCESS. In other words, tons of blood and guts, tons of nudity, tons of bad camera work (It looks like a Porno film half the time! Oh', the humanity!) and lets not forget, tons of strange and interesting characters!
One of the main characters in the movie is a Thrash Metal guitar playing warrior, who has the ability to cause wind storms with his electrical guitar, strong enough to rip people in to shreds! Talk about giving people the "axe!"
'Yup! These type of movies are for those of us who grew up watching THE TOXIC AVENGER while playing with TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES action figures and STREET FIGHTER II on the Sega Genesis! We're the same type of people who get a kick out of MORTAL KOMBAT, bad gorilla suits, chicks with machine guns, fake gore and anything with martial arts involved. So if you don't like rubber costumes and cheesy special effects, might I suggest watching something else? Some people will love this movie. Some will hate it.
SAMURAI PRINCESS begins horrifically gory like any enjoyable Cult film and leaves a blood soaked trail to the very end. The movie pretty much throws every single kind of low budget special effect it has at the viewer, giving way to some really good death sequences and some really lame ones too. The CGI looks like it's from the early 1990's, but that shouldn't be a problem for anyone who's seen MACHINE GIRL. Both movies are loaded with the same type of gory special effects. Like a bucket of garbage, if you throw enough of it at a wall, some of it will eventually stick.
The story takes place in what I'm assuming is the future, considering there are cyborgs and such. Although, it never really tells the audience a specific time period. Who knows? Maybe it did? I might have been too busy watching one of the female characters rip apart guys with her "scissor" foot. And no, I'm not kidding. She actually has a pair of scissors for a leg!
Anyways, a young girl and her friends are raped and horribly killed in the woods by a gang of men and two powerful robots. (One robot has the scissors on her leg, the other has a chainsaw on his.) Left for dead in a pile of her friends body parts, a scientist rescues one of the young girls from eventually dying alone. Mortally wounded, she swears revenge on the ones responsible for the death of her friends. Thus, she alows the scientist to repair her and turn her into a robot. The rest of the movie is scene after scene of gory dismemberment for the most part. She has tons of weapons, including a buzz saw in her chest. The middle of the movie lags a bit, but that doesn't last too long, getting right back into the bloody fight scenes.
This movie has a lot going for it but one of the main reasons I ended up enjoying it so much was the music. For as cheap and bloody as SAMURAI PRINCESS is, the music actually brings forth a sense of art to the whole thing. Some people might not view it this way but I think music can make or break a film. Thankfully the music here actually helps the movie along.
Over all I enjoyed this movie. Then again, this is just the type of thing that entertains me. SAMURAI PRINCESS is for those of us that accidentally watched SURF NINJA'S (maybe even enjoyed it), played with GHOSTBUSTER toys and "slime" as a kid and collected GARBAGE PAIL KIDS in the meantime. It's the type of movie that guys will love and girls will hate. Then again, some girls might be into this type of thing too. Just don't pop this movie in on Christmas day for your white bread, conservative, religious Aunt's and Uncles to see. It's guaranteed to offend and get you kicked out of the house!
I do have one complaint about SAMURAI PRINCESS. It's the basic and straight forward camera work. I said earlier that it looks like a Porno film and that's the truth. Some scenes are well shot (with a camera lens adding some interesting color here and there) but for the most part, it looks like someone was using a simple hand camera. Not really a big problem considering the type of movie this is, but I get the feeling that some people might not be as forgiving as I am.
Gore Hounds, do I even really have to say it? There's enough blood, body parts, fake latex, weird costumes and disturbing scenes to last a couple of films over! Heads are chopped off, geysers of blood explode out of bloody stumps, brains are ripped out and other nasty chaos ensues. Some of the special effects are cheap (the CGI during a few parts is worse than the 3D effects in STAR FOX from the Super Nintendo!) but then again, this movie isn't trying to be anything it's not. SAMURAI PRINCESS is cheap, loud, in your face and offensive! Don't say that I didn't warn you!
Quick summary? SAMURAI PRINCESS is like a mix between POWER RANGERS, a Porno, Troma Films, MORTAL KOMBAT and a live action Anime. If any of this sounds bad, time to move along people!
Over and out!
