Blu-ray Reviews of Rush: R30 [Blu-ray]

Blu-ray Review: An Angry and Cheated fan speaks!
Summary: 2 Stars

You know, I am a fairly conservative guy and as such generally do not spend much time complaining about products or indulging in conspiracy theories and generally griping about stuff. But I am also a big music nut and as a fan I expect something back from the rock bands who I have helped make rich and famous over long careers. See, I am the type of fan that, given a band that I really enjoy... I will buy EVERYTHING. So for literally hundreds of bands, from Aerosmith to Zappa and most in between, I have gone a long way in lining their pockets.

Therefore I think I have a right to speak out when I am shortchanged. Rush have severely disappointed me. If the band members are not the planners of this little sales strategy, they are certainly second hand guilty parties by not putting their hands up and saying "no way will we allow this!" And for those of you who will leap up and give a knee-jerk defense to the band I say you need to stop and think first. How on earth can the record label, the management or the band defend releasing a Bluray with none of the extras that were present on the DVD version? Especially when it is being released on a format that could have included hours of additional extras!?

Rush have been somewhat generous in releasing archival material, but not as generous as they could be. Looking at the awesome live clip they gave us of La Villa Strangiato from '79, I have to wonder "why not give the fans the whole damn show?" Because you're embarassed about a flowery shirt or some flubbed notes? Come on guys... couldn't you be a bit more generous? I understand the artists' impulse to want only perfect performances to represent their legacy... but all their fan's have been to the concerts and heard the mistakes, and still pay for the tickets and buy the records (usually too many times), always forgiving the mis-steps and loving the concerts anyway.

Point is, I am really sick of artists wanting to hold back on vault material, just giving fans little teases here and there and leaving them wishing for more from the band that they handed out their hard-earned money to over the course of many years or, as in this case, many decades, making them rich and famous along the way. Of the two sides to this argument I think the loyal fans that gave these musicians a career deserve to win the argument more often than not, but generally they loose.

The R30 bluray is a perfect example of the fans loosing BIG TIME. I waited patiently for a Bluray realease of this set, knowing that the techno-saavy boys in Rush would want to send this out in high def. Now I knew before buying it online that the extras were not listed on the back. I had checked it out in the store. But I foolishly thought "no, they wouldn't possibly leave the extras out, in fact, there are probably more than on the DVD." I couldn't believe it when I put the Bluray in... just couldn't believe it. A few extra songs to finish the concert is nice, but where are all the extras... were are the extended interviews? Where is the making of the concert video documentary? Where is the extra hour of archive videos in addition to those already on the DVD. And even if you wouldn't add all that, where is the stuff that was already there!!

I'm sorry, but there's no excuse for this. Instead of getting the nice package that I was waiting for, I was forced yet again to buy the same thing twice. Lucky for me the DVD is still available, but I shouldn't have to buy the same thing twice, Geddy, Neil and Alex! I have everything you have released and I already bought your CDs twice... ALL the remasters. And here I am buying twice something that was only recently released. Of course, shame on me for expecting better from the band I love and their management.

My advice to the fans out there that haven't purchased already... The difference between the DVD and Bluray on my High Def system with large LED widescreen: minimal. Actually the DVD looks absolutely awesome, and it's only if you perform an A-B test that you can see the minor differences. If you get the DVD you will have all the extras along with a great sounding and looking modern concert. The few additional concert tracks on the bluray are non-essential for me, with every previous live video already in my collection. This Bluray was one of the biggest let-downs I have experienced in a long, long time.

If the record label and management wanted to make sure they sold through all the copies of the DVD they should have held off on releasing the Bluray instead of forcing fans into an extra purchase.

Now I've said my piece... I would encourage others that agree to let the band know what you think.
