DVD Review: Rush R30 - Faithful To The Band And Fans Alike Summary: 5 StarsAt the risk of sounding flowery, I count myself very luck to have had Rush as a companion that has been with me most of my life.
I first heard the band at 17, as many of us did, with the release of 2112. What an amazing record that was for that time, I wore it out
and I'm sure drove all my friends and family partially crazy with it. Later I worked my way backwards through all the earlier albums and have
been near the first to get each new album as it is released.
All we really have that we can call our own in any given generation are the artists that make life worth living or special to just us. Be it great actors like Robert Duvall, writers and screenwriters like Stephen King and Aaron Sorkin, directors like Spielberg and Ridley Scott or musicians like Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart.
Being lucky enough to see the band live 7 times in my life, and I hope not for the last time, I found Rush R30 to be a faithful representation of the band and the energy and the performance. True it is not perfect, and they simply cannot play everything that all the fans want to hear after a 30 year history of composing songs - But I swear they seemed very happy to be playing "Red Barchetta" and some of the other Rush classics. They still stand up strong after all these years.
I give Rush R30 as well as the Snakes & Arrows DVD TWO-Thumbs UP and hope that they grant us at least one more tour. The DVD and Blu-Ray's are great, but nothing, and I mean *nothing* compares to seeing them live.
ps. Be sure to check out Rush in the upcoming movie "I Love You Man".
DVD Review: Still got it after all these years Summary: 4 StarsLike many other writers here, I also grew up with Rush. As a teen I discovered their first album with John Rutsey and then followed them up until about their Permanent Waves album. After that,I got side tracked with New Wave music and lost track of Rush.
It was only recently, when our band started playing a bit of Rush and my friend bought the book "Roadshow" by Neil Peart, that I started getting curious to know what these guys were doing these days. So, I bought this DVD and I have to say it contains some great music. These guys still have what it takes and their chops are still strong. I especially liked the R-30 overture which contains much of the earlier music I am familiar with.
I also really enjoyed the bonus features and especially the interviews with the band members. After watching these interviews from various periods in time, I felt I had a greater understanding of who Rush really are as people. It's been nice to reconnect with these music heroes from my teen years. That's not to say Rush is for teens but that's just when I, personally, last actively listened to Rush.
All in all, a worthwhile purchase. If you enjoyed the music, I would also recommend the book Roadshow which was written by Neil Peart while on this very Tour. The book chronicles Peart's motorcycle and band adventures as he rides from town to town with the R-30 roadshow.
