DVD Reviews of Roy Jones Jr.'s Greatest Knockouts

DVD Review: Probably the greatest boxer of all time
Summary: 3 Stars

This isn't an exciting video because you know in advance that they are pre-selected KO victories for Roy Jones. It is just a showcase of some of his greatest hits. You don't see Tarver, and you don't even see Toney. What you do see is perhaps the greatest fighter, pound for pound, who ever played this game. Roy Jones Jr has to be right up there with Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, and all the other greats of all time. Jones may be above them all.

I know that there is a tendency to say that Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest fighter pound for pound who ever lived, and a lot of that is because he is perceived as being a class act, but he did beat up his wife frequently, and he really wasn't such a class act. He was kind of nutty and self centered. Even so, he fought well above his natural weight, and that may be the only reason to say he was better than Jones. I'm not so sure of that.

One problem I had with this video, besides its complete lack of any kind of drama, was the sound effects attached to a lot of the punches. I didn't mind when the sound effect sounded like a tire iron clunking into something, because that obviously isn't real, but I did mind when the sound effect was like one of those phony Bette Davis Eyes whip-like sounds that aren't quite as obvious as the clinking sound they also used here. The tv show The Contender makes use of a lot of sound effects as well, and it reeks of phoniness. That is not the way a punch sounds. This is not a phony Rocky movie, and the only sound effects that should have been used are the utterly unrealistic ones, the clinking ones, because that can be taken as a joke.

I knew a girl who knew Roy Jones Jr down south before he was famous. She told a few good stories about him. He was always a unique character. This girl was, for a while, the girlfriend of a very good boxer named Jade Scott, who didn't stick with the game long enough to win a world championship, but wasn't too far from it.

Roy Jones had amazing hand speed combined with a lot of power. How do you beat that?

The video gets a little boring after a while. It's the same old same old. Roy Jones beating on somebody else.

I like what the mixed martial arts referees do better than what boxing referees do. Boxing refs allow a fighter who is on the floor to have a few seconds to clear his head, and then stand up and get the crap beat out of him some more. MMA refs don't care if you get knocked down, they allow your opponent to jump all over you, and they stop the fight a lot quicker if you aren't defending yourself. It seems, to the ignorant, that it is being kind to a fighter to allow him to rest a few seconds after a knockdown, but it is the opposite. It is being kind to him to stop the fight, not to let the beating continue after a few seconds of rest. In some of the fights on this video I was thinking they should have stopped the fight much sooner. No wonder people get killed in boxing every year, but nobody ever gets killed in MMA. They allow a beaten man to absorb more punishment in boxing, thus the concussions and brain damage. Also, boxing protects the weapon with those heavy gloves, allowing boxers to beat on your head for an hour. The boxing gloves cause those ring deaths, by protecting the hand so well, enabling dozens of head punches to shake up your brain.
