DVD Reviews of Rossini - Il Barbiere Di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville)DVD Review: Wonderful Opera Summary: 5 StarsPurchased this for my Mom she loves juan diego florez and was not disapointed in this production.
DVD Review: A barber without an edge Summary: 3 StarsAs a steady JDF fan, I am always impressed with his singing.I also enjoyed his dance steps and comedy. He does not disappoint; however, I can't say the same about the rest of the cast. The production itself is not interesting. I will be looking forward to a Barber with JDF and a more excellent cast in the future, like the current production at Covent Garden (I know it's not being produced for DVD). I hope there'll be one.
DVD Review: Wonderful Musical Comedy Summary: 5 StarsFor a day in which dark clouds envelope you, if any theatrical event can lift your spirits, this is it. Rossini is Rossini and I have nothing to add to that. The librettist gave him every opportunity to shine and he did so. The cast ranged from very good to excellent, making the most of their iconic numbers and handling the others with an aplomb which gave a full measure of pleasure. The production was right on target with sparkling colors, vivid action, and fitting sets. What made it all work was the creation of scenic and costume designs which were contemporary neither to Rossini's nor our times, but rather were pure theater. Presumably there are those to whom the vocal embellishments intrinsic to bel canto grate. They had better go elsewhere since that is the essence of song here.
For the rest of us, this is a version of one of the standard works which truly glitters, no moss, no dust, no age blemishes; simply joy.
DVD Review: You won't get a haircut from the Barber of Seville Summary: 5 StarsWhat you'll get from this DVD is wonderful singing. Although the staging is not fantastic, the music more than makes up for it. And the acting lightens the opera with appropriate comic actions.
DVD Review: Barber of Seville Summary: 5 StarsA very imaginative version of the opera. It is well done and the contrast between the black and white scenes and the use of color towards the end were remarkable. It holds the viewers attention with singers who can also act. I viewed it with my 11 year old granddaughter and she was never bored and asked questions which made it evident she was captivated by the story. I recommend it for all ages.
