Blu-ray Review: A Roller Coaster of Powerful Emotions

Could there ever be a better Romeo and Juliet? Perhaps not!
EVERYTHING works perfectly: Casting, Costumes, Choreography, Cinematography, Dancing, Acting/Stage Business, Sets, Sword Fighting - have I left anything out?
YES, the MOST important factor, the engine which drives the whole Emotional Roller Coaster, Prokofiev's energetic/dramatic/majestic/tender/tragic MUSIC! It is played brilliantly, recorded to perfection, and appropriately Conducted by a Russian, the highly experienced and thoroughly professional Boris Gruzin.
The Royal Ballet, Covent Garden, has got to be the United Nations of Dance! We have: (1) The amazingly athletic Carlos Acosta (Romeo) from Cuba, who IS Romeo, the Young Man who dances with Harlots, then falls head-ever-heels for the ethereal 13 year old Juliet. (2) Tamara Rojo from Spain, (but born in Montreal in 1974 of Spanish Parents), who IS a convincingly still-plays-with-dolls Juliet!! (3) There is also a huge cast whose last names will convince you that they, or their ancestors, are from all over the globe.
Standout performances in Acting are demonstrated by all the Principals, particularly The Nursemaid (name to follow) and Juliet's Mother, Elizabeth McGorian (born in Zimbabwe!) Her grief at the death of her only Son, Tybalt (Thiago Soares from Brazil) is over-the-top, but totally convincing. Juliet's Father may not be a great Dancer, but he can certainly portray a vindictive and combative person, as well as a Fierce and Frustrated Father. Paris is a bit wooden, but it is a difficult role trying to portray The Rich and Handsome Suitor, who is being rejected for no apparent reason.
Try this out on your non-Balletomane Friends: Tell them it is a Dance Version of Romeo and Juliet (aka West Side Story), explain that the three sexy girls with curly hair are the Harlots, and provide other explanations as you go along. If you have a really good Home Theatre, I think they will love it. Better provide lots of food to keep their energy up, and some Kleenex for the last act!
