DVD Review: The Rocky Movie With Character Studies
Summary: 4 Stars
After not seeing this film since it had come out in the theaters in 1976, I was almost shocked at how little action this movie had compared to what you see today....or in the Rocky sequels, for that matter.
That's fine. It was needed to give us character studies of the main players: Rocky, his wife, his brother, his manager, etc., people we would see in subsequent films. Also, the fight scenes in those sequels went on too long, anyway. Frankly, I've enjoyed all the Rocky movies, beginning with this one.
In this film, the romance between "Rocky Balboa" (Sylvester Stallone) and "Adrian" (Talia Shire) was a major subplot to the boxing saga. It reminded me a bit of the '50s film with Paul Newman, "Somebody Up There Likes Me." If you enjoyed this movie, check that classic film out.
The DVD transfer of this 2-disc Collector's Edition is excellent, especially considering the movie is almost 35 years old.
DVD Review: STALLONE'S CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT!

I own the older box set with the first 5 Rocky films included in it. I wanted to write reviews for the individual films. This review is for the film and the older release DVD.
What more can be said about this lovable lug?! Stallone has never been better than in this heartfelt and inspiring story. With a colorful cast and exciting fight scenes, this film is simply magic!
The DVD I own is OK, but if your a big fan the 2 disc special edition is the way to go!

The original "Rocky" is an amazing boxing film. It wasn't high budget. It did not have huge stars in the main roles. It was nitty-gritty. It worked. Forget the sequels. They are OK. But, Rocky is the only GREAT movie of the bunch.
It has its faults, including being somewhat overly sentimental, but it may be the best boxing film ever.
Also, Sly Stallone is an OK action actor, but this is the one film where he does an absolutely terrific job.
Personally, my favorite scene is the one in the ice skating rink.
And, of course, the boxing match scenes are awesome!
