DVD Reviews of RockyDVD Review: All Time Top 10 Summary: 5 StarsA great film in a decade of great films, Rocky is the tale of a palooka nobody who is given a shot at the title. It is also a look into the lives of "small" people living life in a harsh world day-to-day without dreams and little hope.
The training sequences, character interactions, and film score are excellent. The backdrop of the tough city of Philadelphia is almost as important part of the movie as the characters. Yet possibly the defining moment of the movie (and rightly so) is the fight at the end. An outmatched Rocky, bloodied and beaten, yet determined to go the distance, keeps coming for more.
Finally, late in the fight, knocked down yet again, Rocky wills himself up even with men in his corner urginghim to stay down as Adrienne watches helplessly from the crowd. In this pivotal scene, the films score is fabulous, along with the cutaways to Adrienne and Apollo whose arms, aised in triumph, slowly lower in disbelief as he sees the battered Rocky rising yet again to keep going. No matter how many times I watch the movie it gets me every time. A true must see.
DVD Review: Gus???? Summary: 5 StarsThe review by Jeff Shannon should be completely discarded. Anyone that calls Rocky's trainer "Gus" should be forced to write a weekly column on gardening tips. Rocky's trainer's name is Mick and he is phenomenal, this movie is phenomenal. Do yourself a favor and purchase this timeless, inspirational classic movie and never read anything that Jeff Shannon writes again.
DVD Review: The Rocky Movie With Character Studies Summary: 4 StarsAfter not seeing this film since it had come out in the theaters in 1976, I was almost shocked at how little action this movie had compared to what you see today....or in the Rocky sequels, for that matter.
That's fine. It was needed to give us character studies of the main players: Rocky, his wife, his brother, his manager, etc., people we would see in subsequent films. Also, the fight scenes in those sequels went on too long, anyway. Frankly, I've enjoyed all the Rocky movies, beginning with this one.
In this film, the romance between "Rocky Balboa" (Sylvester Stallone) and "Adrian" (Talia Shire) was a major subplot to the boxing saga. It reminded me a bit of the '50s film with Paul Newman, "Somebody Up There Likes Me." If you enjoyed this movie, check that classic film out.
The DVD transfer of this 2-disc Collector's Edition is excellent, especially considering the movie is almost 35 years old.
DVD Review: STALLONE'S CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT! Summary: 5 StarsI own the older box set with the first 5 Rocky films included in it. I wanted to write reviews for the individual films. This review is for the film and the older release DVD.
What more can be said about this lovable lug?! Stallone has never been better than in this heartfelt and inspiring story. With a colorful cast and exciting fight scenes, this film is simply magic!
The DVD I own is OK, but if your a big fan the 2 disc special edition is the way to go!
DVD Review: The Greatest Underdog Movie EVER!!! Summary: 5 StarsAll i have to say is this is one all time Classic films and has inspired millions and spawned countless imitators. If you havent seen this you havent lived.A Perfect 10!
Description of RockyRocky Balboa, club fighter from the mean streets of Philadelphia, gets an unlikely shot at the heavyweight championship of the world by taking on champion Apollo Creed. The irresistible story of the boxer who gives his all to win the championship title won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director and catapulted Sylvester Stallone to superstardom. The only remaining evidence that Sylvester Stallone might have had a respectable career, this 1976 Oscar? winner (for Best Picture, Director, and Editing) is still the quintessential ode to an underdog and one of the best boxing movies ever made. After writing the script about a two-bit boxer who gets a "million-to-one shot" against the world heavyweight champion, Stallone insisted that he star in the title role, and his equally unknown status helped to catapult him (and this rousing film) to overnight success. The story is familiar, but it's handled with such vitality and emotional honesty that you can't help but leap and cheer for Rocky Balboa, the chump-turned-champ who stuns the boxing world with the support of his timid girlfriend Adrian (Talia Shire) and grizzled trainer Gus (Burgess Meredith). Oscar nominations went to all the lead actors (including Burt Young as Adrian's hot-tempered brother), but four sequels could never top the universal appeal of this low-budget crowd pleaser. --Jeff Shannon
