DVD Review: Bottom of the barrel Disney

I've seen the majority of the "classic" Disney animated films, and "Robin Hood" (1973) does not come close to them in quality. The story features Robin Hood taking on King John, whose brother, the true King of England (King Richard), is off on the Crusades. King John is outraged after being robbed and tricked by Robin Hood and retaliates by increasing the taxes in his kingdom. This back and forth continues for awhile until Robin Hood finally triumphs. Yawn.
The quality of animation of "Robin Hood" is not drastically better than what you would see in the typical 70s Saturday morning cartoon. The character designs are rather generic and undistinguished, particularly Toby Turtle, Sir Hiss, and Robin Hood himself. The plot is quite boring and certainly is not clever enough to entertain adults, although it may entertain easily amused children. Clearly, the film's low budget hurt it greatly. The only positive aspects were a couple of decent songs (especially "Not in Nottingham" by Roger Miller) and the conceit of making all the characters into animals. I haven't seen a few of them, but "Robin Hood" is my least favorite of all Disney animated films I have seen.
Note: I rented this DVD, so I don't know what extras were offered aside from those on the disk, which included a cute Mickey Mouse cartoon and a couple of lame children's games.

Robin Hood is one of the 'oldies but goodies'. Sometimes we tired of the new fangled digital movies and appreciate the old ones where the color was hand painted, cells drawn individually, etc. Robin Hood is one of the good ones along with Snow White, Cinderella, Pinochio, etc. Disney at their best!DVD Review: A wonderful classic from my past, delightful!

Not many people give this movie enough credit simply due to budgetary constraints when it was being developed, but I grew up with this movie during my childhood and I was overjoyed to finally see my childhood disney movie brought back to life, restored and cleaned up on Disney DVD. I think this is a wonderful, charming, and enjoyable Disney film. True, it lacks the longstanding perfection like some of their biggest hits (Aladdin, Lion King, Beauty and the beast) but I love the animal design of the Robin Hood characters and I really think the vocal cast, especially Prince John's voice actor, all work nicely together to make a great film. Its old fashioned animated charm with a neat spin on an infamous old tale. I definitely recommend this to anyone looking for something clean, fun, and unique enough for their children to watch.DVD Review: Robin hood

Perhaps it's the warm, chummy take on key relationships within the legend--the way Robin Hood (Brian Bedford) gets twitterpated whenever the subject of Maid Marian (Monica Evans) comes up or the way best pal Little John (Phil Harris voicing a variation on his own Baloo from The Jungle Book) admonishes the Sherwood Forest hero, "Aw, Rob, why dontcha just marry the girl?" (Then, of course, there's the canny "casting" of the romantic leads as foxes: Robin the sly one and Marian the, well, foxy one.) The rest of the vocal cast is lively and eclectic: Peter Ustinov, Andy Devine, Terry-Thomas, George Lindsey. Roger Miller provides the songs and voice for the minstrel character Allan-A-Dale. The film is ably directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, whose decades of work in Disney's animation division helped create the studio's rich legacy. --Tom Keogh
