DVD Reviews of RizeDVD Review: A mind altering experience Summary: 5 StarsI am not much of a hip-hop fan and typically detest rap. I would probably have a prejudice against the young people depicted in this film if I had just encountered them on the street. But this film opened my eyes to see some things in a new light.
I had heard of RIZE when it first appeared in the theatres a few years back and garnered favorable reviews. I decided then that this was a film that should at least be checked out. I'm glad I did.
Director David Chapelle does an excellent job of compiling a historic overview of the subject matter, a look at what the subject matter is about, and the people involved. Getting to "know" these young people is indeed an honor and an uplifting experience. My expectations about what I was going to experience in the viewing of this film were blown away and I was completely taken by surprise by how the film ended up. The positive message conveyed by this film is one that gives me hope and elation. I highly recommend this film for all to see, especially the young people who can more greatly appreciate the musical styles the provide the background for most of the action of the film. I don't want to say too much about the film other than it is a film about young people faced with some truly difficult challenges in their lives who find a positive creative outlet through dance. But believe me the film is also about much more than that. A wonderful documentary! See it, see it, see it!
DVD Review: Invaluable Insight into the Origins of these Modern Dance Forms Summary: 5 StarsWhat better way to understand krumping and clowning, then to go to South Central LA, to Tommy the Clown's academy, where it all started? Great insight, great dancing. It was just great.
DVD Review: Overview Summary: 5 StarsI thank you for your prompt response in mailing the DVD to me. I look forward to buying from you in the future.
DVD Review: RIZE Summary: 5 Starsthis is one of the great dance movies of the last like 15 years in my opinion. it shows how dance can really affect a people and keep people out of trouble. it shows the relation between old and new, religion, spirituality, and so much more. it hits home for me. i grew in the era of battles and dance offs. but being from the city of chicago we didnt krump or clown it was all about the foot work. a high intensity, very fast dance the was based on quick and sharp movements of the feet and legs. a good example is the video for the song "watch my feet". and if the dancing dosent get u interested the hard bodies of the great dancers will!
DVD Review: ONE OF THE BEST DOCU-FILMS EVER Summary: 5 StarsAS A DANCER AND DANCE EDUCATOR, I FOUND THIS FILM TO BE WONDERFUL, REALISTIC, ENTERTAINING AND EDUCATIONAL. IT IS ONE OF THE BEST DOCUMENTATIONS OF AMERICAN LIFE THERE IS. I HAVE USED IT IN MY CLASSROOM AS A COMPONENT TO TEACHING ABOUT SOCIAL AND SOCIETAL RELEVANCE, AND HOW IT RELATES TO THE LIVES MY STUDENTS/DANCERS. THANK YOU MR. LACHAPELLE FOR SHOWING MYSELF AND MY STUDENTS/DANCERS THAT NO MATTER YOUR CIRCUMSTANCE YOU CAN IN FACT "R I Z E"
Description of RizePresents a history of the urban dance form krump and clowning as seen on the streets of South Central Los Angeles. Genre: Documentary Rating: PG13 Release Date: 9-JAN-2007 Media Type: DVD The riveting documentary Rize explores the physically astounding Los Angeles worlds of clowning and krumping--both heightened and spectacular styles of hip-hop dance. With roots in breakdancing and the furious response to the Rodney King beating, clowning was launched by Tommy the Clown, a former drug runner turned children's-party-clown, with brightly colored jumpsuits and a psychedelic afro wig. To gather attention, Tommy began to gyrate and writhe in the street; before long, he was not only getting gigs, he'd inspired dozens of other clown groups, all with their own spin on face make-up and Tommy's dance moves. With a little cross-pollination from stripper dance moves and a good dose of aggression, clowning begat krumping, which resembles a cross between an epileptic seizure and ecstatic possession--what one practitioner calls "ghetto ballet." In addition to dancing that will make your eyes pop, Rize interviews dancers like Tight Eyez, La Nina, Lil C, and Miss Prissy, building a portrait of a subculture, culminating in a dance battle between clowns and krumps called BattleZone V. Directed by photographer and music video director David LaChappelle, Rize persuasively portrays these twin dance movements as not only a personal exorcism, but as the effort of a community to escape the corrosive forces of gangs and drugs. --Bret Fetzer
