DVD Review: Return to Lonesome Dove, a great movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I think this is one of the greatest films of all time. The scenery in it is fantastic and the actors are all wonderful. It is a wonderful story about two men taking a herd of cattle and horses from Texas to Montana and all the trials and troubles they run into on their way there. Anyone liking this type of movie would love to have it in their collection. It is deffinately a keeper to be watched over and over again.

DVD Review: The archetype of TV western series
Summary: 5 Stars

The DVDs were new and factory sealed as promised. They arrived promptly. Only Deadwood challenges these two western series - Lonesome Dove and Return to Lonesome Dove. The acting is superb and the story is inspiring. The production quality and resolution are surprisingly good for almost 6 hours of video on only 2 discs.

DVD Review: A Pleasing Sequel
Summary: 4 Stars

I watched Lonesome Dove last weekend during the 25th anniversary re-broadcast. It was, quite simply, the most amazing western I have ever seen. I rented Return to Lonesome Dove to see if it would answer a lot of open questions such as what happened to Laurie, will Call ever tell Newt he is his father, will July and Clara get together etc. Well, it did answer all of those questions, but it left more than it answered. The biggest problem I have with the series is how on earth did all these people know each other spread over such a huge country? Oh well, that aside it was a pleasing sequel and the acting was top notch. I am not normally a Barbara Hershey fan and was disappointed she took over Angelica Houston's role but she quickly won me over. Oliver Reed stole this movie in my opinion as best actor in the cast. Newt and the crew were all outstanding in their return performances but Rick Schroeder really shined! Reese Witherspoon was cute & charming but hardly believable in her role. The one I couldn't get past though, was Jon Voight as Call. Just didn't have that square set jaw, stubborn, deep in thought look that Tommy Lee Jones pulled off so well. He spent most of the movie looking like if someone yelled "boo" he would burst into tears. The violence was toned down considerably in this version as was the "poke" references though they did surface from time to time. I am looking forward to Streets of Laredo to see how on earth Pea Eye and Laurie end up together because that one really requires some mind-stretching but all-in-all I was pleased with this sequel to the greatest western ever made.

DVD Review: UNPLAYABLE
Summary: 1 Stars

I was not aware that I would not be able to play this movie on a dvd player when I ordered and paid for it this was a big! waste of my money.

Description of Return to Lonesome Dove

Return to the story that captured both the spirit of the Old West and the hearts of America. Return to the breathtaking locations, dramatic confrontations, stirring romance and thrilling action. RETURN TO LONESOME DOVE. Jon Voight, Barbara Hershey, Rick Schroeder, Louis Gossett, Jr., William Peterson and Oliver Reed star in the sweeping story of three ex-Texas Rangers, based on characters created by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Larry McMurtry. After returning the body of Gus McCrae to Lonesome Dove, Woodrow Call takes on the challenge of driving a herd of wild mustangs 2500 miles north to the Hat Creek Ranch in Montana. But tragedy, triumph, despair and deceit will greet him before he ever gets there. From Indian battles and deadly gunfights, to broken hearts and broken dreams, it's another incredible adventure you'll be able to treasure time and again. RETURN TO LONESOME DOVE continues a classic tradition: to perfectly capture and preserve the pioneer spirit of the American West for generations to come.
