DVD Reviews of Religulous

DVD Review: A must movie to be broadcast on all main TV channels
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a movie which could save our planet. Considering that a lot of people will not make the effort to read related books such as "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins, "The End of Faith" by Sam Harris, or "god is not Great" by Christopher Hitchens, this documentary can be watched as a highly entertaining movie and, indirectly, it can open the eyes of a lot people who think they know all the answers or are afraid to face the truth. It should be dubbed in as many languages as possible (I would recommend even in Yiddish) and it should be broadcast on every main channel around the world. I hope somebody will have the guts to do it. Anyway, thanks, Bill! You're great!

DVD Review: Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

If you like Bill Maher's take on world issues and his somewhat dry sense of humor, get this movie. Although he has become a Far Left individual with strong opinions on Bush, Palin and Health Care, I still find his delivery of his material hilarious.

DVD Review: Religulous
Summary: 3 Stars

I enjoyed the video, but had to watch it in short segments. Too much of it made me sleepy. Some parts were very interesting, others not so much.

DVD Review: Lack of depth, ad hominem attacks doom Religulous
Summary: 3 Stars

For years I have enjoyed watching Bill Maher's programs, especially the unjustly cancelled Politically Incorrect. Maher is one of the few politically aware comics. He is one of the smarter comics, not afraid to put Ann Coulter, Dr. Cornel West and Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) on the air at the same time. His weakness is a true hatred of religion. The problem? Bill Maher does not really understand religion, Christianity in particular.

Maher repeatedly stereotypes Christians as believing in a talking snake (i.e. the serpent from Genesis). He does this despite the fact that Catholic and Protestant scholars have known for a long time that much of early Genesis is myth. Myth means the story reveals deeper truths. It is not science, there was no modern science when the Old Testament was written! An astronomer from the Vatican, featured in Religulous says as much. Maher's is repeatedly unable to distinguish Fundamentalists from the thinking faithful of Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

The documentarian says time and time again that he has doubts and questions, attacking those who are "certain." Doubts and questions are fine, but he would have fewer of them if he updated himself on 20th and 21st century theology. I will continue watching Real Time, but pass on Religulous if seeking an honest, intellectual debate on religion.

DVD Review: Tell it like it is Bill.
Summary: 5 Stars

I love how Bill raises so many tough questions about Religion and its place in this world today because universally Religion has become a "NO-NO / Not open for discussion... ever" topic. I appreciate Bill for trying to clear up the clouded issues about religion and all that estrange baggage that comes with it as it takes a lot of guts to undertake an issue so sensitive to so many people of different cultures. If you'd ever wondered why and how Religion has become such a powerful notion around the world and in our everyday lives today, then you should definitely check this movie out. Who knows, you may even become a non-believer.

Description of Religulous

COMEDIAN & TV HOST BILL MAHER TAKES A PILGRIMAGE ACROSS THE GLOBE ON A MIND-OPENING JOURNEY INTO THE ULTIMATE TABOO: QUESTIONING RELIGION.
Bill Maher incurs the wrath of multiple religious zealots of myriad faiths in Religulous, a snarky but unexpectedly powerful documentary. Maher bluntly disputes the value of religion in a world made increasingly dangerous, on the one hand, by fanaticism of all kinds and the human race's environmental self-destructiveness on the other. No one is immune from Maher's dogged questions about the illogic and negative fallout of doctrines that advocate violence or shun scientific evidence or marginalize minorities or punish anyone who disagrees with any religion's extreme tenets. Maher takes his inquiries to the Vatican; to small, evangelical Christian churches; to Jerusalem; to Amsterdam (where elements of an increasingly vocal Muslim community have shown violence toward critics); to a large, African-American church in a big city; and to several bizarre theme parks celebrating creationism and the life of Jesus. Wherever he goes, Maher seeks to demonstrate that many of the world's major religions are rife with hypocrisy, completely self-referential, and destructive to the collective good. The fast-moving, globe-trotting film is full of highlights, including a great scene where Maher, in disguise, argues for the core beliefs of Scientology to a bemused crowd at Speaker's Corner in London's Hyde Park. There's also a wonderful moment where Maher, just having been thrown out of the Vatican, gets a terrific interview with a maverick priest. Raised Catholic but in reality half-Jewish, Maher also spends time with his mother and sister trying to reconcile the role of religion in his childhood. Everything is really leading toward Maher's major point that atheists and agnostics are in a sizable minority but are afraid to speak out in these days of zealotry. If that minority stays in the background, Maher says, we may very well be heading toward catastrophe. --Tom Keogh
