Blu-ray Reviews of Reign of Fire [Blu-ray]

Blu-ray Review: Easily one of the worst fantasy movies ever
Summary: 1 Stars

Reign of Fire aspires to be great. It puts a high mark for itself, and falls utterly short. The total of a movie is the sum of its parts, and the parts I sum up are its characters, its story, and its visuals. Most the time, you get at least one really good element in any movie. Avatar might lack story, but it's visuals are unbelievable. Moon might lack deep characters, but it's story is amazing. Inglorious Basterds might lack breathtaking visuals, but it's characters drive it incredibly well. Reign of Fire fails in absolutely every category. It's visuals are absolutely terrible, with some of the worst effects I've seen in my life. The fact that Bladerunner or Starwars, made more then two decades before Reign of Fire, both have highly better visuals is absolutely unacceptable. If they didn't have budget for CGI, then use something else. I was shocked how fake the dragons looked. And for a movie with the word "fire" in its title, the fire effects in this movie are absolutely awful. This is easily the worst fire I've ever seen. They should have used stock footage if they couldn't manage to render it right, but alas, they didn't. I can't even stress how awful the computer generated effects in this movie are. This is 2002, not 1999. If you're going to have CGI, there's no excuse for it not looking real. Who worked on this movie, high school students? Even the rather disappointing Outlander has far better effects then Reign of Fire, and actually was done by college students.

Regarding the story and characters, Reign of Fire falls even flatter then it does in the visual area. The characters are unbelievably badly acted. Reign of Fire makes Christian Bale's performance in Terminator Salvation look Oscar worthy. Matthew McConaughey does what he can with his terrible written character, but there's just not that much that he can do. All the supporting characters are flat, and there's no one you can really sympathize with. Bale's character is painted as wrongly driven... as if surviving is a bad motive. MacConaughey is the stereotypical idiotic fighter who runs into battle without a shirt on, swinging a sword in an age when people generally use nuclear armaments. Children's cartoons have deeper characters then Reign of Fire.

Though the visuals are disappointing, the characters flat, the story is by far the worst thing in Reign of Fire. The writer must have purposefully tried to lace it with holes. Why can dragons see perfectly well in the bright day, and in pitch black, but not in mid-light? That doesn't even remotely make sense. How is there only one male dragon? What single species on earth has only one male period? Sure, we have bees and ants who have one queen per hive, but there are thousands of males and females in any species that wants to survive! The idea of one male is simply absurd. What drives any of the characters? What's the point of the movie?

I wish I could find anything good in Reign of Fire. I really try to review movies fairly. I gave Outlander three stars. It might not be great, but there are good action scenes, a few well done effects, and the middle of it actually has some interesting characters. I wish that Reign of Fire had any interesting characters, any good fight scenes, or any good effects. But it doesn't. You would have to look pretty hard to find a movie worse then Reign of Fire. If you really want a decent B-movie about dragons, try Outlander. It's not good, but at least it isn't utterly terrible.

Description of Reign of Fire [Blu-ray]

Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale battle terrifying beasts -- and each other -- in REIGN OF FIRE on Blu-ray Disc(R). Packed with action, this thrilling adventure is hotter than ever in this explosive new format! All hell breaks loose when an unearthly creature is awakened after centuries of slumber. Twenty years later, "fire chief" Quinn (Bale) tries to keep a group of refugees alive with ferocious dragons dominating the air and burning the land. But tempers also flare when Quinn clashes with a hotshot American militia leader (McConaughey). Gasp at the bone-charring special effects in spectacular 1080p and cower as fire-breathing dragons roar in thunderous 5.1 48 kHz, 16-bit uncompressed audio. Feel the heat with Blu-ray(TM) High Definition!
The Road Warrior meets Dragonslayer in the briskly entertaining post-apocalyptic action thriller Reign of Fire. Reign of Fire exists primarily to give us a bigger and better dragon than the Vermithrax Pejorative of 1981's classic Dragonslayer, and in that regard, the special effects are mightily impressive; the reptilian fire-breathers are stupendously convincing. While the earlier film offers a richer, more whimsical medieval adventure, Reign of Fire is a fast-moving tale of man versus dragon that takes place in the charred England of 2020, after Earth has been scorched by rapidly multiplying dragons and the aftermath of a futile nuclear counterstrike. Mixing high-tech gadgetry with primitive survivalism, X-Files alumnus Rob Bowman makes the most of his midlevel budget, establishing a lavish castle base for the rugged, adversarial teaming of Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey as dragonslayers on the brink of extinction. With a steady supply of crowd-pleasing highlights, Reign of Fire is a pyrotechnical treat. --Jeff Shannon
