DVD Review: Very pretty! Does exactly what is says on the box.
Summary: 5 Stars
The DVD cover says "breathtaking ocean scenes for relaxation and ambience", and that's exactly right. This is a DVD to play as beautiful background entertainment. Reefscapes is my current favorite of the many ambient visual DVD's I own.
What's interesting about this is that it isn't a fish tank video. There are other DVD's on Amazon if you want a virtual fish tank (I actually have 3 of them). Reefscapes shows coral reefs from Fiji in the Pacific ocean. So instead of a tank background you get the ocean background.
The camera is stationary on each scene. This lets you take in the whole scene. You can watch the swarms of fish swim with the motion of the ocean. The different types of corals are gorgeous. Each scene lasts up to a minute, then there's a seamless transition into the next scene. Run time is one hour. There is a setting to loop so you can play the DVD over and over if you like.
Reefscapes isn't a documentary. There is no narration or commentary, so you may get bored if you're expecting a documentary or story.
PICTURE QUALITY -
It has a decidedly professional quality about it. I find the picture is sharp, clear, very colorful and vibrant. For the record, I'm watching it on a 50" Panasonic plasma with a Sony DVD player that has up-converting capabilities (it up-scales the resolution from standard definition to HD). Reefscapes isn't blu-ray, but still looks pretty darn good to my eyes.
"NATURAL" AUDIO OPTION -
This doesn't really sound like of a fish tank with a pump, as one of the reviewers noted. To my ears, the natural audio sounds like soft crackling with faint bubbles. It's similar to the reef sounds you hear in documentaries, so I assume that's what coral reefs sound like.
"MUSIC" AUDIO OPTION -
It is actually very good IMO, very dreamy and meditative. I usually have the music option selected, it seems to bring the scenes to life.
THE BONUS "CLOSER LOOK" CHAPTER -
The bonus chapter runs for 20 minutes. It has shots from Fiji, like the main feature, but they are filmed much closer. Each shot shows a different fish, sea star, coral, anemone, et cetera. Sometimes the camera follows the subject if it is swimming around. This is a more intimate look at the reef dwellers. It is a nice balance to the main feature which concentrates on the "big picture". There are simple subtitles if you want to know the name of each animal.
MY VERDICT OVERALL -
I very much enjoy this DVD. It is something pretty to have playing on my TV when I am entertaining, instead of just having a big black screen in my living room. And it is also good for relaxing because I can just zone out to the scenes and not have to think. Another reviewer said there is a preview on Youtube, which I watched before purchasing from Amazon.
