DVD Reviews of Rat Skates: Born in The BasementDVD Review: I wish there were more Summary: 5 Stars
The only negative I can say is that I wish there were more. The entire production is engaging, and will leave you wanting more. The film functions on two levels, both of them very well.
If you were around in the early 80s and remember the emerging metal scene, and especially if you know the northern New Jersey neigborhoods mentioned, then this will bring back many memories. If you're a fan of Overkill (and every thrash fan ought to be), it's a fascinating explanation of how the band came to be.
At 66 minutes, you might be afraid that you're not getting your money's worth. Have no fear; the real length is probably three times that. You'll watch the film itself, then play it back again with Rat's personal commentary. Then you've got bonus footage that's probably equal to the feature itself.
Other reviewers mentioned how interesting it was to see the way Rat built the band, with he, Lori, and others doing everything by hand without the benefit of corporate backing. Beyond this, the evolution of the band itself was compelling. I had no idea that Overkill had punk roots. And, for example, I was surprised to hear about how Blitz evolved his stage presence; today it's a hallmark of the band, but apparently there was a lot of learning and testing in its development.
What I do wish, as another reviewer mentioned, is that there were some perspective from Blitz and DD. Even as Rat was the band's creator, Blitz and DD went on to make Overkill one of the most significant thrash bands, and to keep it the only band today that's both true to the original promise while still being original.
Also, much of the archival footage shown is of marginal quality. I can't fault them for this, and it's certainly the best that exists (there weren't any fans in the audience back then recording in digital HD!). It's just a shame that there isn't a better record of something that turned out to be important to so many people.
Overkill is known for putting every ounce of energy into its music and especially its shows. Rat is true to that reputation, investing much energy and, I think, personal conviction in this production.
