DVD Reviews of Raise the Red Lantern (MGM World Films)DVD Review: ....gimme a break Summary: 1 StarsUnfortunately for me I had seen this flick. Chinese movies never connected to real life as freedom of speech is directive from Communist party and to understand it you have to move to China and experience reality and this is why the movie set up in 1920 as it safe. Movie is also boring as it possibly could be. Brrrrr...
DVD Review: 4 stars out of 4 Summary: 5 StarsThe Bottom Line:
(N.B. This review applies solely to the film, for I agree that the DVD quality is terrible)
Raise the Red Lantern is a powerful and brutal tale of intrigue within a mansion, as the 4 mistresses of the master vie for his affection and the power it bestows upon them; a strikingly beautiful and powerful film, Raise the Red Lantern is well-made and interesting enough to be worth recommending to any and all demographics.
DVD Review: Captivating!!! Summary: 5 StarsA young girl becomes the fourth wife of a typical chinese patriarch around 1925 or so ... and as a western viewer one gets sucked into the strange, hidden and intricate world of traditional chinese customs and rules. To me it was absolutely fascinating to have a peek into this world! With four wifes, servants and an aloof husband who rules the house there is plenty of intrigue and even murder! A murder so shocking and rather (for a westerner) unexpected that my jaw dropped the first time I saw the movie. If you are interested in China, their traditions and a good story, here you go! (Well, on the other hand I think you'll still love it even if you're not completely sinophil!)
Our heroine tries very hard to have a say in the house, to be of consequence, to be treated with respect and that is only possible if she wins favour with the husband and master ... But at the same time so does every single one of the wifes! And so tragedy inevitably takes its course ...
A side note: "Raise the Red Lantern" is apparently a famous and widely known novel in China. (I have a chinese friend whom I talked to about the movie and she does NOT like it! She insists that the director changed and shortened too many things ... Well, I don't care because even if I wanted to read it I don't think the book is available in english and so I enjoyed the movie as it is tremendously.)
DVD Review: Chinese Drama Summary: 5 StarsExcellent insight into some Chinese culture. Excellent acting and tugs at the human heart strings in telling a story of poverty, riches, betrayal, love, hate and madness. Gong Li is well respected in Asian cinemas and has had a fruitful career. Watching this one can see why.
DVD Review: Fascinating film/story Summary: 5 StarsThe story depicted in this film is an accurate account of how life was for many Chinese women in ancient times. It is an amazing tale of courage, deception, jealousy, resiliency, and revenge, told in a story that captures the imagination. The depth of spirit in the characters is striking. Photography and direction is absolutely superb. This is the type of film that lingers within the soul.
Description of Raise the Red Lantern (MGM World Films)Studio: Tcfhe/mgm Release Date: 07/24/2007 Run time: 125 minutes Rating: Pg Zhang Yimou (Ju Dou) directed this fascinating, visually formal 1991 film about an educated woman (Gong Li) who is sent off to become the newest wife of a feudal nobleman in 1920s China. Nearly isolated in his spooky, palatial home, she develops relationships with several of the other wives and slowly becomes aware of a hideous legacy of punishment toward more willful women. The film has a brittle and dry quality that is deliberate, but also suggestive of Zhang working through various explorations of his own style (which he resolved in his next film, The Story of Qiu Ju). Gong Li, one of the world's great actresses, is superb. --Tom Keogh
