DVD Reviews of Quantum Leap - The Complete Second SeasonDVD Review: absolutely wonderful show Summary: 5 Stars
I have all the shows on VHS, and this is a dream of a generation... for the VHS tapes are dyin' on me! To have the supurb quality and ability of DVDs with my favorite show of all time... needless to say, I'm pumped!
I have to agree with the latest reviewers. Season two has got to be one of my favorites. The characters of Sam and Al really become fleshed out and not quite so two dimensional.
Honeymoon Express (season opener)- This was a terrific show which catches Admiral Calivicci in hot water with a Senate Oversite review that is going to shut the project down, while Sam is a cop on his honeymoon... and in physical danger there too. On top of having a new bride all over him!
Disco Inferno- Al is in Disco heaven, and Sam is in disco hell... a low budget flick is being filmed, and Sam is a stuntman who must control his impulsive younger brother, and alcoholic stuntman father.
The Americanization of Machiko- A good episode that really shows the cultural differences of smalltown America dealing with racism and bigotry. Sam's "mother" won't forgive him for bringing home a Japanese bride... and his "bride" has no future if Sam doesn't correct the past!
What Price Gloria?- Sexual Harrassment rears it's ugly head. And Al sees Sam AS the leapee "Samantha"... Al has to eventually talk to Verbeena Beeks, the staff psychologist, cause he's in love with his best friend! meanwhile, Sam is trying to keep from ruining Samantha's life forever!
Blind Faith- Sam leaps into a blind pianist. His girlfriend is rebelling against her tyrannical, but well meaning mother, and there's a subplot with a killer that's attacking women in the park.
Good Morning, Peoria- A good episode about the problems of Rock & Roll when it debutted in America.
Thou Shalt Not...- Probably one of the worst episodes of the season, and I'd give it about a six! That' ain't bad for a BAD episode. Sam's a rabbi, and must prevent the breakup of his brother and sister-in-law... while helping them deal with the grief of the loss of their son.
Jimmy- Without a doubt, the best show of the season. Sam has leapt into Jimmy, a troubled young man with Downs Syndrome You find some very interesting facts about Al's past, and he's determined to help Jimmy succeed. This show has ties to other shows later in the "life" of Quantum Leap.
So Help Me God- Stuck in the Deep South, Sam is trying to save the life of a young black woman accused of murdering the town's most powerful citizen's son. Sam's own morality shines forth as he fights those that would treat other people with ignorance and bigotry.
Catch A Falling Star- Sam leaps into a stand-in actor in "Man Of La Mancha", and suddenly is in love... he runs into his former piano instructor, a young woman he had a crush on at 13.
A Portrait for Troian- Debra Pratt, series co-creator, plays Troian, a young woman who is haunted by the specter of her dead husband. Sam is a parapsychologist who's investigating the paranormal occurances.
Animal Frat - Sam is a football jock embroiled with the troubled times of the Vietnam war's effect on college students... and partying with the Fraternity!
Another Mother- A POWERFUL episode with Sam leaping into the divorced mother of three, and the youngest can see Al for who he is. Truly touching, and you get to see a side of Al you never did before. Sam must save the life of his oldest, a young man fighting teen pressure to have sex and betrayal.
All Americans- Another Extremely powerful episode where Sam leaps into a high school football quarterback, a young mexican citizen that must save his family, and his friend's, while also securing the leapee's success for college.
Her Charm- Some liked this show... others didn't. At first I didn't like it, but it did grow on me. Sam's a bounty hunter, and having a bit of trouble bringing "her" in.
Freedom- Sam's leapt into a young native american indian, in jail for stealing a truck... and he's trying to help his grandfather get home... to die. A sherrif is out to stop them, as well as Sam's sister.
Good Night, Dear Heart- A great episode with Sam leaping into a coroner standing over a young woman that's died... and Sam's having insightful flashes... suspects she was killed. The ending twist of who did it is a shocker for the late eighties... one of the first shows that openly deals with this type of situation.
Pool Hall Blues- Sam leaps into an old pool shark... who's trying to watch out for his granddaughter... they've gotten mixed up with some bad people and need to save their bar from being taken over by them.
Leaping in Without a Net- Sam's a trappez artist, and Sam's afraid of HEIGHTS!
Maybe Baby- Julie Brown guest-stars as a stripper who's absconded with a baby, trying to return her from a bad daddy, to the mother that had to leave.
Sea Bride- Another episode that rubs off on you. Sam leaps in as the formerly dead husband of a young woman that's getting married to a mobster.
M.I.A. (season finale)- an emotionally gripping episode with Al trying to help Sam convince a Navy nurse to not declare her husband dead... for he's held prisoner by the Viet Cong. Sam is a policeman that also has to save his partner. You get to really know Al again in more of the emotional upheavals of this episode. Sam is forced to make a decision that is very painful for both him and Al. Something that ends up getting addressed n the final episode of the fifth season!
