DVD Reviews of Pride and PrejudiceDVD Review: A twist to a classic Summary: 5 StarsI'm sure there are fans that would be very unhappy with the turn out and the strengths of the characters, but I have to highlight the differences. This is a movie and in picture land stories are manipulated to fit the audience's needs. Including the big costumes and dramatic expressions that the actors wear. I was very happy with the way the story was interpreted. Laurence Olivier is very talented too. If you're an individual that demands to see Pride and Prejudice as how Jane Austen wrote it, try the Pride and Prejudice 1995 TV mini-series by BBC.
DVD Review: Could be worse. Summary: 3 StarsWell, P&P fans, this isn't exactly the best version I've ever seen, but it's not the worst either.
There are a couple of things which seriously throw me off, namely the costuming and Mr. Darcy. The period doesn't seem to be Regency England at all; the costumes remind me more of Anna Leonowens from 'The King and I'--all bell-skirted and massively bonneted. Seriously, not an empire waist to be seen. Very weird. Can't say it flatters poor Greer Garson, either. And Laurence Olivier as Mr. Darcy falls very close to ridiculous: he has none of Mr. Darcy's reserve or aloofness, nothing that would make him instantly unlikable to those who don't know him. He's very...florid. Comes off more as a Mr. Wickham than a Darcy.
On the other hand, Greer Garson is witty and charming. I admit to watching this movie just for her. The supporting characters are hilarious (I am especially fond of Mary), if not precisely like the originals. And although the plot differs from the book fairly significantly, it's not difficult to follow, so long as you don't expect another A&E masterpiece.
In all, I'd recommend this movie for a rainy day, but not if you want to introduce yourself or anyone else to the Austen movie genre.
DVD Review: Almost a new story Summary: 5 StarsPride and Prejudice
What can I say? I have seen the latest Pride and Prejudice and the re-make from the 90's and still this movie suprises me. I never thought that it could be done like this. The movie is aprox 2 hrs and we all know that the long version of Pride and Prejudice is almost 5 hrs. Can the whole story be told in 2 hrs?
In this one, it can, but with a small change so that the whole story can be told. The end is what I would say is the biggest diffrence, but still, very satisfied with it. I liked it, even though the dresses did remind me of the movie "Gone with the wind". So if you are fond of those movies, you will love this one. And if you love Pride and prejudice, you will be satisfied. This is the story of a "american" Elizabeth with a "american" Mr. Darcy. Why do I say something like this?
Well, you will have to see that for yourself. Enjoy the movie!
Ps! I live in Sweden so if my spelling isn't correct, sorry!
DVD Review: great show Summary: 5 StarsI have really enjoyed the movies I have purchased from Amazon! The movies and books have been shipped fast.
DVD Review: Non-traditional but I love it! Summary: 5 StarsI admit, I love Pride and Prejudice. I probably have 7 versions of this story. This one is a little off on the details from the book but it's one of the few where I can't help but like Mr. Darcy through the whole thing. Darcy and Elizabeth's banter is classic. I love this movie!
Description of Pride and PrejudiceStudio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 10/10/2006 Run time: 118 minutes Rating: Nr Jane Austen's wonderful novel has been adapted to the screen many times, with this 1940 version representing the golden age of the Hollywood studio era. Greer Garson, then just on the cusp of her stardom, plays the headstrong Elizabeth Bennet, smartest of five daughters who must be married off. Laurence Olivier is that difficult fellow Mr. Darcy, whose mulishness about the Bennet girls begins to thaw when he gets a dose of Elizabeth's sense and sensibility. The film is done up in the glamorous MGM house style, which means we're stuck with the less-than-inspired direction of Robert Z. Leonard (The Great Ziegfeld), redeemed somewhat by a collection of handsome sets (Cedric Gibbons and Paul Groesse won the Oscar for Interior Decoration) and the dandy photography by Karl Freund, one of the greats. Anyone accustomed to the 1995 miniseries version of Pride and Prejudice will need to adjust to the swifter demands of a two-hour movie, and to be sure this version, like the 2005 Keira Knightley remake, simplifies some of Austen's scenes. It's one of the few films, by the way, with Aldous Huxley as a credited screenwriter. Edmund Gwenn is lovely as Mr. Bennet, and Mary Boland brash as Mrs. Bennet; Garson, although MGM liked to corset her in fine-lady roles, manages to let Elizabeth's sauciness come through. Actually, the movie's weak spot is Laurence Olivier's elaborate performance as Darcy, which feels too theatrical. Not that it matters; Austen's story is so good, the film sails through to its delicious finish with all flags flying. --Robert Horton
