DVD Reviews of Power Yoga - Total Body Workout

DVD Review: Awkward and Seems Made-up, not Authentic Yoga
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this DVD after having taken a power yoga class for a year, and having practiced Nicki Doane's Ashtanga Yoga (Beginners Series) for about a month. No doubt this DVD gives you a good workout--you definitely sweat and feel exhausted yet envigorated. However, I've since stopped using it for a few reasons, mostly because he has (what seems to a novice me, so take with a grain of salt) an awkward way of sequencing some movements. For example, when coming out of the chair pose to standing, I find it really awkward that he has you keep your arms up until you're all the way up; by contrast, it's much more natural to open your arms out and toward your sides AS you're rising up, which is how other instructors do it. Then later in the DVD he has you stick your legs out in front of you for two seconds (without bending over for a stretch) between doing other leg positions (like the butterfly stretch) and I see this as totally unecessary and without any purpose. What do I get out of putting my legs out there for two seconds? It just seems awkard, made-up, and not 'flowy', like most yoga I'm used to. He does this with several movements/sequences. On top of it, I find some of his arm gestures (as he's transitioning between asanas/positions) too balletic and flowery and unnecesary. I find myself wanting a more no-frills, "pure" yoga practice when I watch this DVD.

Also, for triangle pose, he stretches his legs WAY far apart from each other--way further than I've ever seen. Is this OK, or did he also make this up?

Also, when going from downward dog to 'standing forward bend', aren't you always supposed to go right foot first, not either one? He's inconsistent with which foot goes first. It's obviously not a MAJOR issue, but on my Nicki Doane DVD, she says that traditionally, you always move with the right foot first (because the right foot carries a specific significance that I can't now remember). Little details like this make the rest of his practice seem less authentic, and possibly more made-up.

In sum, it seems as though Rodney Yee has taken traditional yoga practices and added his own little flourishes and additions here and there that don't really seem authentic, but more importantly, NECESSARY, to me. I guess maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I prefer the "purer" practice of Nicki Doane or (from what I've heard) David Swenson. This DVD made me really wonder what all the hype is about Rodney Yee, and why they mostly sell HIS yoga DVDs at stores. I've read rave reviews about David Swenson's Ashtanga DVDs and I look forward to trying him out. While Nicki Doane didn't get great reviews, I definitely prefer her sequence and practice to this one because it seems MUCH more authentic, and much more "meat n' potatoes" without all the frills and unecessary positions, gestures and movements.

Overall I think this is a pretty good yoga DVD, but I feel like there's better stuff out there.

(p.s. I don't think it's good for beginners, unless you're already in pretty good shape)
