This video is just wonderful. Very detail oriented. You can see the front and the back of her. I love how she repeats movements, first slow then faster. Challenging, but so much fun! I have been bellydancing for a few years now, self taught just by instructional videos, no formal classes. I would consider myself intermediate to advanced level. This was my 6th video purchase, and by far the worst. I bought it based on all the good reviews it has received, but after watching it I have no idea why it got such high praise. I figured for the length of it, 95 minutes, that I would learn something new. It was basically 95 minutes of the same 7 moves over and over and over and over. These were moves that someone who is intermediate to advanced should already know. It's helpful if you want to practice, but that is about it. I already know all the basic moves, and was hoping to get help with layering and how to put moves together to make my own choreographies. She only does a few performances at the very end, but with no breakdown whatsoever. The "choreographies" that are shown throughout the video, are just the same repetitive drills lumped together. I have already sent this dvd back and requested a refund.DVD Review: Your own personal belly dance instructor...

I love Michelle Joyce. She's like having your very own personal belly dance instructor - at home. Plus, her videos will challenge even the most experienced belly dancer. I have studied belly dancing for 3 years and I have used her videos for a good workout, or to practice my technique at home when I'm not in class.
This particular video is really good for intermediate / advanced students. But don't worry - if you study Michelle's beginner videos - you'll get to this one in no time.

I love how this DVD is laid out - first a combination is explained, then drilled to slow music, then drilled to fast music. When you feel you've got the combo's down, there's a practice section consisting only of fast drilling. And once you're confident with that, Michelle puts the combo's together into a choreography. By working with this DVD, I went from deer-in-the-headlights at the thought of doing a drum solo, to feeling confident I could put together my own choreography or improv with a live drummer. Will definitely buy more of her DVDs.

Pop, Lock and Shimmy is a complete guide to crisp isolations and layered shimmies. It is designed for intermediate and advanced belly dancers and emphasizes drum solo technique.
Practice is the key to sharp and intricate hip movements. When you spend time drilling these movements they simply become second nature and are naturally integrated into your repertoire.
This 80 minute DVD consists of 11 drills and combinations that are designed to increase your stamina and to get the movements into your muscle memory. After being carefully explained, each combination is first practiced to medium paced music. Once you have mastered the combination at a medium speed, we pick up the pace.
Each segment of this DVD is divided into a separate chapter, allowing you to click directly to any combination at any pace instantaneously.
At the end of the DVD you will learn how the drills and combinations can be strung together into a dynamic drum solo choreography. You will also see a sneak preview of Michelle's performance on By Dancers For Dancers Volume 2, where she performs the drum solo choreography in a live stage show.
