DVD Reviews of PollyworldDVD Review: The kids liked it. The mommy? Summary: 3 StarsMy daughters (4 and 13) wanted to watch this when a grandmother bought this for them. I was very surprised when my 13 yr old decided to watch it with her little sister, because I thought she was 'over' Polly Pockets. My 4 yr old adores Barbie, princesses, Polly ect. All those girlie lines of toys.
The story plot is simple: Polly and friends compete in a thrill show (kind of like Survivor) and end up 'competing' at a theme park named after Polly, since her father is like a spoiler to Polly. They find clues to make it to the next mini-competion.
First of all, I don't understand why the writers made the charecters say, 'totally', 'brat' 'popular' so much. Yes, I know the girls are in middle school. But why gear the toy line to 4-8 yr olds? If they could of made it less mean-spirted, maybe my 4 yr old wouldn't have an increased vocabulary because of this movie.
Secondly, I HATE that every movie HAS to have a steryotype popular girl. Why? Besides, if you're my 13 yr old daughter, this movie would be way too predictable. Beth (popular girl) hates Polly, so tries to ruin her life, like a little punk. The 'stupid' person is a henchman, as well as the uncertain person. Sound familliar?
Lastly, it made me cringe about Lorelei, the evil stepmom that every heroine has. Why include a talk in detail father to daughter about 'dad's new wife'? Once again, why is this geared to a 4 yr old, who asks if I will [divorce] with my husband? We have divorced once, but got back together.
This movie is creepy and made my 13 yr old comfortable, like watching Twilight.
DVD Review: great! Summary: 5 StarsThis movie was a great purchase. My preschooler loved it as well as my nieces who are 8 and 10.
DVD Review: PollyWorld: An Explanation Summary: 3 StarsPerhaps it would help many of you to know that this is a commercial, not a movie. It is designed as a commercial from the ground up. Products are placed, cross-platform design is integrated into the backgrounds, and, perhaps scariest of all, it's based on market research.
It might help to know that market research has shown that video entertainment product can extend the target group viability for an additional couple years. So while Polly Pocket maybe aimed at, for example 4-9 year olds...the presence of a video counterpart has shown to extend the marketability to, for example 12 year olds. As young children aspire to be older, an older sensibility is used on purpose. No one in high school wants to watch a movie about high school. This follows that premise.
You might also be interested to know that market research has shown that "girls love elevators" or "girls love exploring hotels" or "girls aspire to be in rock bands"...that is why these elements are included in the plots...not to drive the plot...but to hit all the important marketing points.
Also, this "movie" isn't the creation of the writer, the director, or the production team. This movie was created by an executive and the staff at Mattel. The production house is solely charged with making all of these things work. The reality of it is that, in the end, Mattel has to have something to put on a shelf to coincide with a toy release. It doesn't matter if it is good or bad...it just has to be present.
I hope that illuminates some of the criticism...all valid...but all based on the idea that this was supposed to be a movie...it never was...it has always been a commercial.
DVD Review: We love Pollyworld Summary: 5 StarsThis is the most awesome movie for polly fans. My kids walk around singing the songs from this movie all the time

Description of PollyworldJOIN POLLY AS SHE HITS THE WORLD'S MOST FABULICIOUS AMUSEMENT PARK FULL OF MONSTER GOOD RIDES, THE ULTIMATE SHOPPINGEXPERIENCE AND MUSIC TO THE MAX - INCLUDING A NOT-TO-BE-MISSEDPERFORMANCE BY POLLY AND THE POCKETS! Polly Pocket is an optimist who regularly puts the needs and feelings of others before herself, so when she and her friends are invited to spend the weekend in the "PollyWorld" theme park and compete in a reality show called "Roll Like That," it seems like the perfect opportunity to have a great time while demonstrating just how effective teamwork can be. Polly is disturbed when her father unexpectedly announces his engagement to a woman named Lorelai, whom Polly has never met, but she is determined to be happy for her father and enjoy her weekend with her friends. Fun and teamwork take precedence over winning for the Polly Pocket team and the girls are having a great time in Polly World until Polly discovers that Lorelai has joined forces with her adversary Beth and is scheming to destroy her team's chances of winning and the close relationship Polly has with her Dad. Rather than jeopardize her father's happiness, Polly stays silent, potentially sacrificing her own contentment and her team's chances of winning the "Roll Like That" challenge. This first Polly Pocket movie is brightly animated, 68-minutes long, features contemporary teen rock, and appeals to girls ages 5 and older. --Tami Horiuchi
