DVD Reviews of Peter Pan (Two-Disc Platinum Edition)DVD Review: You Can Fly, Too. Summary: 5 Stars
Since the first production of J.M. Barrie's play, PETER PAN, in 1904, the story of the boy who never grew up has become a part of popular Western culture. It's a story that children love and that adults often adore. It even coined a sociological phrase (Peter Pan syndrome). The play has been performed on stages throughout the world and to this day it remains one of the most popular shows performed in children's theatre companies. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that Peter Pan was one of Walt Disney's favorite stories of all time. He starred in a school production of the play as a child and the 1924 silent movie of the story sparked the imagination of the young filmmaker.
Walt Disney had intended to make PETER PAN his second major animation production after SNOW WHITE. However, it took many years to get the look right and to adapt the story (Disney, after all, was a master of taking a story and changing it and creating it to his own liking). Of course, there was also WWII which stopped the production of the film for almost six years.
When the film was finally released in 1953, the film was almost an immediate success. Disney markets the film as a "classic" and even though the film produced some memorable characters that have become collective images of our culture, such as Tinkerbell, Smee, and Captain Hook, and is noted for a couple of historical reasons (it was the first film to have Peter be played by a boy and it was the last film RKO distributed for Disney) the film isn't all that spectacular. In fact, after the film's release Walt Disney himself was disappointed by final product. Yet, Disney's version of PETER PAN is loved by children and looked upon fondly by adults, just like the story of Peter Pan always has. In that since, the movie is a classic.
The Walt Disney Company has released PETER PAN several times on DVD, but if you're a fan of the film, the Platinum version is the one worth owning. The Platinum Edition of PETER PAN comes in a two-disc set. The film itself is found on the first disc. There is a commentary that included comments from some of the films illustrators and performer, but the commentary is more of a vocal documentary about the making of the film rather than a commentary about the movie itself. The first disc also includes a preview for the upcoming CGI film TINKERBELL (I'm not sure from the sneak peak if it will be a theatrical release or a direct to DVD), sing-along versions of the film's songs, and a read along story entitled "Peter's Playful Prank".
The real special features of the extra features are found on disc two. This disc includes a deleted song from the film entitled "The Pirate Song" that is accompanied by the actual rough sketches intended for the sequence. There are two music videos. One of the music videos has a group of pre-teeny boppers named T-Squad jumping up and down to a technoized hip hop version of the song "Second Star on the Right". The other music video has Paige O'Hara singing along to the song "Neverland", a number written for PETER PAN, but that was never included but was recently discovered in the Disney archives. This video is previewed by a short featurette describing how the song was discovered and why it was written. There are three children's games on the disc, including a Sudoku challenge named after Smee. Then there are several featurettes. These are what I found to be the most interesting part of the second disc. First there is "You Can Fly" that is a look at how PETER PAN was made. Next up is a reading of one of Walt Disney's own writings that was originally published in 1953 in a now defunct magazine to herald the release of the film. The piece is called "Why I Made PETER PAN" and is accompanied by pictures of young Walt and dramatic reenactments. This piece explains Walt Disney's love for the story of Peter Pan, how he grew up on the story, his experience of playing Peter in a school production, etc. Another featurette I really enjoyed was "The Peter Pan That Almost Was". This segment includes two of the researchers/producers of the Platinum Edition going through original illustrations, sketches, and storyboards to illustrate how Walt's original idea of the film evolved through the years. For instance, Nana was supposed to accompany the Darlings to Neverland, but this idea was axed just before final production began. Another featurette is "The Peter Pan Story--1952" which is an archival promotional film strip. Strips like these used to be shown in theatres before feature presentations, along with newsreels, short films, and cartoons. I guess you could say they were the original cartoons and trailers, but these things are so much more interesting. Besides, they weren't trying to sell anything else except for seeing the movie itself. The last extras on disc two include numerous art galleries that show illustrations, sketches, storyboards, etc. from throughout the making of the film, including some things that haven't been seen before by the public.
