DVD Reviews of Panic in the Year Zero/The Last Man on EarthDVD Review: Panic in Year Zero DVD Review Summary: 3 StarsAn interesting movie starred and directed by Ray Milland, which is ruined by an awful and inappropriate musical score. The black-and-white 2.35:1 widescreen DVD is of very good quality.
DVD Review: GREAT DOUBLE FEATURE WITH SUPERB QUALITY PRINTS! Summary: 5 StarsI never saw either of these films in my youth and considering how much I love these types of movies, it astonishes me! I watched 'The Last Man On Earth' a while back and while I found it very good, it did have some unintended laughable moments in it. Price is terrific as the title character and this film follows the book 'I Am Legend' most accurately. The print on this DVD is just beautiful and presented in widescreen. There is also a short featurette with Richard Matheson who wrote the book 'I Am Legend' and something I was not aware of....the screenplay for this movie under the pseudonym Logan Swanson! He also wrote the screenplay for one of the greatest Sci-Fi films ever made,'The Incredible Shrinking Man'. Although the featurette is embarrassingly short (7 minutes), I found it very interesting.
The second film 'Panic In The Year Zero' is one of the most intelligent Sci-Fi flicks I've ever seen! It was refreshing to see one of these old Sci-Fi movies where the characters react like "real people"! Ray Milland stared and directed this little known gem and it is well worth the price of the DVD on it's own. Frankie Avalon has a large role as Milland's son, there isn't a beach in site and he doesn't sing a note! A rarity for Mr. Avalon for sure. The two for one deal here should not be passed up by any Sci-Fi or Horror fan. The DVD transfer of this film is as sharp as the other film. It's a fantastic deal for the two early classics.
DVD Review: Buy it. Summary: 5 StarsI purchased this dvd to get a better transfer of "Last Man on Earth." Both films are quality transfers with clear picture and sound. Last Man is the best iteration of Matheson's "I am Legend." Price, as usual, is fantastic. Panic was entertaining and worthy of repeat viewings. Both films are excellent and worth the price.
DVD Review: Great survival film. Summary: 4 StarsThis is the kind of film that makes you think about what you might do in similar circumstances.
DVD Review: Vincent Price!! Plague!! Vampires!! Frankie Avalon!! Summary: 5 StarsFirst off lets tackle The Last Man On Earth. Great movie, and pretty much what the five stars goes to. We all know the story because of that dreadful Fresh Prince movie: A worldwide plague as decimated the population and turned folks into vampires. Vincent Price is the last man alive and three years after the plague hit, is leading a rather boring life. During the day he gets supplies, repairs his damaged home, tries the radio for signs of life, still bothers to comb his hair, and hunts for vampire resting places. At night he sits in his home while the vampires do a very halfassed job of trying to break in. These scenes will no doubt have you thinking about Night of the Living Dead, and it's easy to see why considering this film was a big influence on Romero. Which brings us to the vampires. Bela Lugosi doesn't have to worry about these guys cramping his style coz they're dumb, sluggish galoots that are more like zombies than vampires. Vincent Price walks through a large group of them and merely pushes them aside. In fact, they seem more of a pain in the ass than a threat. We know they're vampires only because we're told they are and their weaknesses are vampire weaknesses. The vampire scenes are few. Most of the film shows us the backstory and scenes of Price in the daytime. It's not boring by any means. The backstory sequence is great. Soon Price discovers that he's not alone with the vampires and he faces a much more dangerous threat. There are a few holes in the logic, but who cares? It's a Vincent Price monster movie, and a damn good one at that.
I had never seen Panic In The Year Zero before, so I didn't really know what to expect. It's actually a pretty cool Cold War paranoia film. It's kinda like a cross between The Trigger Effect and Red Dawn, only without Elizabeth Shue and "WOLVERIIIIIINNNES!!" North America has been hit by numerous nuclear bombs. We never find out by who, but that's not the point. The movie's point is to show how civilization can quickly fall apart. Ray Milland(who also directed) takes his wife, son(Frankie Avalon!! That's an automatic star added to the rating right there!) and daughter to a camping area in the mountains to try and avoid the chaos. The film follows them on a series of mishaps and adventures as they try to get supplies and make it to their destination. Once there, they find out they're not the only ones who had the idea of hiding out in that area. Some of their enemies that they met on the road are there as well. Milland soon finds himself stooping to the kind of uncivilized tactics he was trying to avoid while struggling to protect his family. Not a bad movie at all.
This disc would be more than worth the asking price if it were The Last Man On Earth only, but the addition of Panic In The Year Zero makes it a steal.
