DVD Reviews of Panic in Year Zero/The Last Man on EarthDVD Review: PANIC IN THE YEAR ZERO/ THE LAST MAN ON EARTH Summary: 5 Starsa great double feature if you are "an end of the world, how do i survive the zombies" fanatic out there! ( you know who you are!!) the last man on earth was the original ( followed by " omega man" with charlton heston and will smith "i am legend " penned by richard matheson. they are all great movies on their own. panic in the year zero which was done in the 60's during the height of the cold war depicts how a family from l.a. is forced to deal with survival after l.a. is destroyed by an atomic bomb! all is not lost, there is hope at the end of the movie.
DVD Review: Apocalyptic double feature of 60s classics. Summary: 5 StarsOne of the bese Midnite Movies double features is this duo of apocalyptic classics made in the 60s.
The first is the excellent, "Panic in the Year Zero".
Directed by and starring Ray Milland as a father who is trying to lead his family through a nuclear holocaust by surviving in the forest and taking on the elements.
Surprisingly tense and exciting, the film's only debit is the inappropiate jazzy film score which detracts from some of the suspense, otherwise very gritty and real. This one makes for a terrific conversation piece, and is still relevant today. The print for the film is pristine Black and White and is presented in the appropiate letterbox format. A must for the Sci-Fi fan.
The second film is more in the Horror vein, and that is the widely available 1964 adaption of Richard Matheson's "I am Legend", entitled "The Last Man on Earth". The best and most atmospheric version of the novel ever made, this is the best print available.
Vincent Price may seem miscast as the scientist who has to single handedly take on a world of vampires, but is adequate enough in the role. The monster scenes appear to have influenced George A Romero's similar apocalyptic epic, his 1968 , "Night of the Living Dead".
This is highly reccomended as well to any "end of the world" completist, and for anyone who actually wants a digitally re-mastered, letterbox print of this film.(You really should SEE some of the terrible prints of this available out there).
This is a fun double feature that will make a great addition to any Science Fiction/Horror fan's DVD collection.
DVD Review: Last Man & Panic Summary: 3 StarsI was interested in the Last Man On Earth as another adaptation of the short story; I Am Legend. The others are Omega Man, staring Charlton Heston & more recently, I Am Legend, staring Will Smith. None of them are true to the short story.
I was interested in Panic In Year Zero because it shows an Amereican family who in a crisis, uses firearms to protect themselves and others in a situation where there is no authority.
DVD Review: Panic in Year Zero/The Last Man on Earth Summary: 3 StarsPanic in Year Zero was well done and worth seeing. The Last Man on Earth was one of the worst "B" movies that I have ever seen. Because of this, I could not give the full high rating.
DVD Review: Fantastic Transfers for Great Movies Summary: 5 StarsAs my title has said the transfer of these movies to dvd are great. I currently a different version of The Last Man on Earth and this one blows it away. Presented in widescreen with care give to picture quality and the sound quality for a movie from the 60's. I have a version from the Platinum company that pales in comparison to this version. Some transfers of old films can be great while others make you mad at butchering your classic. Not so in this case but since I don't know how many versions are out but this one looks like gold compared to my other one.
Panic in the Year Zero is a movie about a nuke dropping in Los Angeles and a middle class family trying to make their way to safety. It kind of showed the nature of people and the nature that comes out in people during a time like that. The overall feeling of the movie is kind of mixed since the father begins to turn into the people he is protecting his family against. Watching older movies kinda helps me see the formula that is used in newer movies and I saw a few used in this movie I have seen in later flicks. Overall a good watch for a problem that could happen.
The Last Man on Earth stars Vincent Price as a man who travels by day to destroy vampires that act like zombies. He has to shack up at night at his house to stay safe so my understanding is it's based on a book called I Am Legend. I saw the Will Smith movie before this one so as I watched this I said to myself "it all seems very familiar". I personally enjoyed the Vincent Price version more since I like older movies better and Vincent Price is great. Like I said about the formula for newer movies also pertains to this one as well.
Special features are not really here in these versions so don't be overly anxious for any. Overall though it shouldn't be missed by fans of these movies and of Vincent Price since a great job has been done with quality.
