DVD Reviews of Pale Rider

DVD Review: Shane its not
Summary: 3 Stars

Clint Eastwood needs to be credited for making 2 very important Westerns, especially the first, in The Outlaw Josey Wales and The Unforgiven. Though famous for the spaghetti westerns, filmed in Spain, made by the likes of Dino Delorentis, when Clint turned his own eye to the genre he chose to not only be serious, but to remind us that life in that era was far from glamerous. With that in mind, he took a crack at remaking Shane. Sure, there are some significant differents. Still, the stranger rescuing innocents is right out Shane. I still found this story to be a little TOO cookie cutter. When I first saw Shane, I really wasn't sure our hero was going to win the big duel. In this case, there was no doubt. I recommend this film with the proviso that you don't expect too much.

DVD Review: 'Shane' Revisited
Summary: 4 Stars

This was a solid western, one of many through the years from Clint Eastwood, who knows how to make an entertaining film.

"Pale Rider" is almost like a modern-day "Shane," in which the quiet stranger enters to help the picked-on landowners and then winds up with a showdown with the evil men in town. In this film, Eastwood plays a "preacher," (that's all he's called in this movie, but he's really a gunfighter) who saves the day for the town miners, led by Michael Moriarty.

**** possible spoilers ****Eastwood's "Preacher" handles the immature love-struck teen (Sidney Penny) well, but blows his moral reputation by having sex with Moriarity's fianc? (Carrie Snodgrass) near the end, although no one knows that except the viewer. So - as usual - there are a lot of mixed moral messages in this film.

A couple of things that are for sure: 1 - the interesting characters; 2 - the convincing bad guys; 3 - the beautiful scenery and photography; 4 - the involving story that makes you care what happens. All of these make this an entertaining film you would watch a number of times.

DVD Review: A SHANE COPY
Summary: 2 Stars

THIS MOVIE IS JUST A COPY OF SHANE. EVEN THE ENDING IS THE SAME.

DVD Review: An Older "Man with No Name"
Summary: 5 Stars

First of all, let me say that this is a superb movie. The acting is spot-on from top to bottom and the cinematography is wonderful. The story is simple enough: Eastwood plays a drifter who takes up with some miners in their battle with a gold-grubbing robber baron, played very well by Richard Dysart. As things heat up, Eastwood's "Preacher" character (both in name and dress) is forced to re-embrace his gunslinging past. The actions scenes are well-choreographed, but -- for me, anyway -- the end represented a very slight disappointment in that it resorted to the "invincible gunslinger" finale. Yes, satisfying, but ringing a little hollow considering the legitimate grittiness of the rest of the movie.

Quite a few people have paralleled this story to that of "High Noon." I tend to take another perspective. I see him simply as an older version of "the man with no name." When Eastwood made this movie, he was 55 years old. Think about the younger version and then age that character another 20 years (the time between Pale Rider and his spaghetti westerns). What would he be like? Would he have settled down and bought himself a place -- as he told Mortimer in "For a Few Dollars More"? Would he have become another Mortimer twenty years hence (although Mortimer obviously had some breeding and book intelligence -- something Eastwood's "street smart" gunslinger lacked)? Another Sentenza?

Or would he simply have ended up a man who failed in everything except killing other men? What would his character be like after killing for another 20 years? An aging man who never found love, never found family, never found peace -- doomed to ride the plains endlessly, running from his past and not knowing where he will end up? Keep in mind that a 55-year old person back then was considered elderly. And Eastwood looks the 55...weary of killing, but unable to stop the cycle.

In the end his character rides off, perhaps for the last time. Will there be any pallbearers at his funeral? Will he even have a funeral? Or will he end up buried in a "potter's grave" -- like so many of the men he shot? A victim when his speed with a gun finally fails him...

Ladd's "High Noon" character could have, and might actually have, settled down to a normal life. But Eastwood's "lone wolf" character couldn't have. He truly would have been alone at the end.

Description of Pale Rider

A nameless stranger who rides into a small California gold rush town finds himself in the middle of a feud between a mining syndicate and a group of independent prospectors.

Production Notes
Theatrical Trailer

After a nine-year break from the genre that made him an international star (the Western just before this one was The Outlaw Josey Wales, from 1976), Clint Eastwood returned in this gritty Western, crafted in the tradition of Shane and High Noon. Eastwood directed and stars as the nameless stranger known only as "Preacher," because he rides into a beleaguered mining town wearing a clerical collar. He's either an agent of death or an angel of mercy, and the echoes of Shane ring loud and clear when he comes to the aid of independent miners who are being terrorized by a local tycoon (Richard Dysart) and his ruthless band of hired guns. Befriended by a miner (Michael Moriarty) and idolized by the miner's wife and daughter (played by Carrie Snodgress and Sydney Penny, respectively), the "Pale Rider" sparks the defiant spirit of the underdog miners and takes after the bad guys with single-minded purpose. --Jeff Shannon
