DVD Reviews of One with Everything

DVD Review: A Really Great Show
Summary: 5 Stars

Even though I'm 50+, relatively new to following STYX closely. Saw them last year with BOSTON and they truly ROCK. This is a great DVD of the current lineup and takes nothing away fron the previous versions of the band STYX. A really enjoyable DVD that I'll probably buy in Blu-Ray now that it's out.

DVD Review: styx never sounded better
Summary: 5 Stars

Styx plays with a bunch of high school kids this show has amazing energy and the kids bring that out in Styx.great blu ray quality and sound

DVD Review: best of both worlds
Summary: 5 Stars

This was so much fun. Great music from Styx.....with an Orchestra. The teenagers in the chorus and orchestra were so enthusastic. It brought an extra energy to the concert.

DVD Review: Get a life Shaw/Young...Move on !
Summary: 1 Stars

First off let me start by saying I do not own this DVD , and I never will , but I just read some of the reviews of this show and I can't believe that people call themselves Styx fans and buy this nonsense without the founder and leader Dennis DeYoung ? It blows my mind away . Question , if you take Paul McCartney out of The Beatles and replace him with a person like this Gowan character will you still call them The Beatles ? EXACTLY !!!! No Dennis , No Styx.... Case closed.

DVD Review: I have one question...
Summary: 1 Stars

So, the Shaw/Young Freakshow take it upon themselves to BOOT the man who PUT THIS BAND ON THE MAP...because they don't like his theatrical tendencies.....and now this? An ORCHESTRA? There is something wrong with this picture....

Where's the ROCK music those two kept complaining about? It's why they booted Dennis DeYoung, after all.

Hypocrites, the both of them.

I think this CD would have seriously rocked if Dennis DeYoung had been there to front HIS band. Lawrence just does not cut the mustard folks. His voice is whiny and tinny sounding....inferior in every way. No soul. Hearing him just reminds of why I miss Dennis.

Go check out Dennis DeYoung's release where HE RIGHTFULLY plays the master of ceremonies as Styx's music is put to an orchestral backdrop. Now THAT's real.

Oh wait, Dennis actually HAS a music background...

Description of One with Everything

Styx are one of the most successful AOR bands of all time with worldwide album sales in the millions. On May 25, 2006 they took the stage in Cleveland for a new venture accompanied by the 115 piece Contemporary Youth Orchestra and a 60 member chorus. With a set list that combined Styx classics, new songs and cover versions this was a truly unique event.

For Styx fans, the opportunity to see the band perform with a symphony orchestra is da bomb; for others, it may simply be da bombast. Either way, One With Everything is a spectacle. Of course, the Styx who ruled the AOR airwaves in their '70s-'80s heyday, followed by their ascension to Classic Rock status, has been through some changes in the last several years. In the absence of Dennis DeYoung (which means we are mercifully spared DeYoung-penned hits like "Come Sail Away" and the cloying "Babe"), singer-guitarists Tommy Shaw and James Young have moved up front. Yet the more things change, the more they stay the same, and Styx remains what it always was: a facile, journeyman band, capable of writing some good rock songs ("Blue Collar Man," "Too Much Time on My Hands," "Fooling Yourself"), with a sound that's distinctive but, in the long run, not especially interesting. Still, there's no denying the sheer joy and energy that permeates this May, 2006 concert, both onstage and in the audience. Much of that is due to the presence of the Contemporary Youth Orchestra of Cleveland, an enormous ensemble (115 players and 56 singers) comprised entirely of teenagers. Under the direction of Liza Grossman, these kids are having a blast, and their enthusiasm is infectious, as Shaw, Young, and the other Styx-ters (original bassist Chuck Panozzo sits in on a few tunes) are clearly giving it their all. In fact, it's almost too much; there's a certain shrillness to the group's screeching lead vocals and super-high harmonies that ends up being both exhausting and slightly discomfiting. Not that this will matter to the band's adherents, who should be delighted by a show that's well over two hours long and includes covers of Willie Dixon's "It Don't Make Sense (You Can't Make Peace)," the Beatles "I Am The Walrus," and Ashford and Simpson's "I Don't Need No Doctor" in addition to Styx's own material. Bonus features include a couple of new Christmas songs, interviews, and more. --Sam Graham
