DVD Reviews of One with Everything

DVD Review: Very entertaining performance...
Summary: 4 Stars

Though not the same as seeing Tommy Shaw and JY live, it does capture the enormous energy and the passion that make up a Styx performance. And, the addition of the orchestra is uniqe and makes for a very special event.

DVD Review: Fantastic
Summary: 5 Stars

If you're not Styx fan, you will be after watching this. The kids are great and should be proud of their orchestra and talents. The band shines and look like they had as much fun as the kids, not to mention the parents and relatives watching them.

DVD Review: Not Classic Styx
Summary: 2 Stars

I think that the original reviewer for this DVD who states that we are "mercifully spared the songs by Dennis DeYoung"...."etc. is full of it. True Styx goes way back to the early 70's dude, and they did exist before Tommy Shaw and were pretty dang good back then too. DeYoung's songs on Mr. Roboto drove everyone away eventually, but dissing a total classic like "Come Sail Away" is downright rock travesty. Get your head on straight and watch the Styx "Return to Paradise" DVD and see the true Styx.

DVD Review: so damn good!
Summary: 5 Stars

iv"e just viewed for the fourth time styx & the contemporary youth orchestra of cleceland and i"m completly blown away, the kids especially are absotuley great, so full of enthusiasm and eagerness, to perform so brilliantly must have been etched in each ones mind. could not fault it, hey!i"m not leaving styx out of this either, they are a very talented group of musicians and i greatly appreciated rhe whole event. liza grossman you should be awarded a bloody medal for your contribution to the kids neds and desires, it was a pleasure to see everyone on stage light up with a total will to do well, and so they did. great to see the joy and pride in all those young musicians and singers, it must have been a heartwarming feeling to have performed in this concert, and lets not forget the audience, they all felt the same way by watching them thru this concert. full marks to everyone concerned, orchestra, concert crew etc, job beautifully done. liza grossman i hope you have further works to come of this wonderful young group of people, i"ll certainly be keeping my eyes and ears open, look forward to what may come in the near future

DVD Review: One with EVERYTHING...except with Dennis DeYoung
Summary: 1 Stars

I'd give this a ZERO because without Dennis DeYoung, its not Styx but a cover band.
They fired Dennis because of egos.....what did Dennis do for the band??? Aww just write all the hits and have the best vocals.

The fire him and hire some dude to sing his songs is a disgrace!

For Styx fans, the opportunity to see the band perform with a symphony orchestra is da bomb; for others, it may simply be da bombast. Either way, One With Everything is a spectacle. Of course, the Styx who ruled the AOR airwaves in their '70s-'80s heyday, followed by their ascension to Classic Rock status, has been through some changes in the last several years. In the absence of Dennis DeYoung (which means we are mercifully spared DeYoung-penned hits like "Come Sail Away" and the cloying "Babe"), singer-guitarists Tommy Shaw and James Young have moved up front. Yet the more things change, the more they stay the same, and Styx remains what it always was: a facile, journeyman band, capable of writing some good rock songs ("Blue Collar Man," "Too Much Time on My Hands," "Fooling Yourself"), with a sound that's distinctive but, in the long run, not especially interesting. Still, there's no denying the sheer joy and energy that permeates this May, 2006 concert, both onstage and in the audience. Much of that is due to the presence of the Contemporary Youth Orchestra of Cleveland, an enormous ensemble (115 players and 56 singers) comprised entirely of teenagers. Under the direction of Liza Grossman, these kids are having a blast, and their enthusiasm is infectious, as Shaw, Young, and the other Styx-ters (original bassist Chuck Panozzo sits in on a few tunes) are clearly giving it their all. In fact, it's almost too much; there's a certain shrillness to the group's screeching lead vocals and super-high harmonies that ends up being both exhausting and slightly discomfiting. Not that this will matter to the band's adherents, who should be delighted by a show that's well over two hours long and includes covers of Willie Dixon's "It Don't Make Sense (You Can't Make Peace)," the Beatles "I Am The Walrus," and Ashford and Simpson's "I Don't Need No Doctor" in addition to Styx's own material. Bonus features include a couple of new Christmas songs, interviews, and more. --Sam Graham
