DVD Reviews of One Punk Under God: The Prodigal Son Of Jim And Tammy Fae

DVD Review: One Punk Under Hyper-Grace
Summary: 3 Stars

I was a little skeptical about the DVD before I saw it because I wasn't sure what a documentary with the title "One Punk Under God" would be like. The trailers seemed more of a gimmick than an actual story. I originally wanted to see this when it aired on TV, but the Sundance Channel requires an expensive TV package.

Watching the first two episodes where Jay is at the former Heritage USA and visits his dad's television show, I couldn't help but feel bad for the guy. He struggles to have a good relationship with his dad, who seems uncomfortable when he's not on camera. In the later episodes Jay deals with losing his mother, who is a cheerful women battling cancer.

Jay's position on homosexuality becomes a focus of some of the episodes. Particularly, the fallout is that his church loses funding and his speaking engagements disappear. Jay's position is clearly at odds with the rest of mainstream Evangelicals in the country, including his ministry partner Stu.

The production on this documentary was excellent. There was a clear narrative, solid editing, terrific camera angles and I got the impression that the story was being told rather than dictated or constructed.

I do however have some criticism for Jay's message of grace. It feels good because it is warm and inclusive, but Revolution is not associated with any denomination and on the church's website it says, "This grace sets no timeline on personal change or standards for spiritual growth." Basically the message is anyone can be a Christian and you don't have to change or repent.

Even though I disagree with Jay's message, I still feel this video was definitely better than advertised. I think it would be worth at least a rental.

DVD Review: A Peace Maker
Summary: 5 Stars

This DVD made me laugh. This DVD made me cry. Jay has a beautiful spirit. He represents some of the true fruits of the Spirit. I believe that all his labor of love is not in vain. He denied true fame to do what he believes is right. He teaches the gospel where many would have turned their backs and walked away. His pulpit is a chair in a bar. He teaches those who have been turned away for being "different",or "undesirable" for many of the mainstream churches that closes their eyes and doors to such people.

Buy this DVD and share it with all of your friends and family. I know that they will be touched. Minds will change. Hearts will open!

DVD Review: Bakker Speaks Truth
Summary: 5 Stars

I was a little apprehensive about this show, but after watching it and owning the dvd, I can truly appreciate Jay Bakker and the whole bakker family a lot more. People are so quick to judge, and Jay Bakker breaks through walls and barriers that have been set up by the religious right and has given the message of hope and peace from Christianity that seems to be lacking from traditional methods. Sincerity over bashing people in the head has gone a long way through this dvd and is a worthwhile show to watch, regardless of your faith.

Description of One Punk Under God: The Prodigal Son Of Jim And Tammy Fae

Enter the riotous and righteous world of punk rock evangelist and preacher's son Jay Bakker--where church is a smoke-filled bar, and tattoos and piercings an expression of faith. This original six-part series from Sundance Channel is the roller coaster story of the son of infamous televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, whose Christian empire collapsed amid scandal. ONE PUNK UNDER GOD plunges into Jay Bakker's candid and unorthodox ministry, and his bittersweet relationships with his cancer-afflicted mother and estranged father. Jay honestly, and sometimes painfully, explores a more tolerant Christianity where malcontents and misfits can worship in their own way. With a wife who wants him out of the ministry, conservative backers who are uncomfortable with his evolving stance on homosexuality, and personal demons to battle, Jay's journey is a modern day parable of forgiveness and virtue.
As this Sundance documentary series makes clear, you've never met anyone quite like Jay Bakker. Son of Jim and Tammy Faye, Jay became an evangelist, but the similarities stop there. Despite a vague resemblance to his father, the heavily-tattooed former drug addict takes an alternative approach to Christianity. He and his Revolution parishioners meet in a bar rather than a church, and their head office is located in an auto-body repair shop. Directed by Jeremy Simmons (TransGeneration) and produced by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (The Eyes of Tammy Faye), One Punk Under God is sympathetic to its subject, but it's no propaganda piece. Jay's wife, Amanda, supports her husband, but admits she'd rather see him do something else. Jay also receives funding from a conservative foundation, even though his own politics are liberal. Then again, his business partner is a Republican. Clearly, Jay Bakker is a man of contradictions.

Aside from his ministry, which takes a hit when Jay announces his support for gay marriage, this six-part program explores his personal life. During the series, he reconnects with his father, spends time with his mother (Tammy Faye was battling stage-four cancer during filming), and moves from Atlanta to Brooklyn. (Like his parents, Jay has also written a book, Son of a Preacher Man: My Search for Grace in the Shadows.) One Punk under God is sure to make provocative viewing for Christians and non-Christians alike. Extras include 16 minutes of deleted scenes and a Bakker family photo album. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
