DVD Review: Overall, a good collection of videos and concert performances

Olivia Newton-John Video Gold I, is overall, a good collection of videos and concert performances.
The DVD starts off, with what seems to be promotional videos from her Totally Hot album.
The rest of the DVD is a mixed bag of videos and "staged," live performances from the video collection, Physical. These are not very interesting, yet the band keeps things lively enough.
Carried Away, is a good song, yet the video plays like an exercise video.
The videos for Falling and Silvery Rain are very good. Silvery Rain is an interesting video, yet the song isn't one of her strongest.
I was disappointed in the video for, Hopelessly Devoted To You. I would have preferred a live performance of the song instead of the video.
The selections included from, Olivia In Concert, are OK, yet it may have been better to add more content from the concert.

if you're an olivia newton john fan and you don't have this dvd and are indifferent to owning it, then you're really not an ONJ fan. It features her best songs and the quality of the DVD is superb. It's interesting to see how music videos were made back then. Not so kinetic, not at all likely to give you ADD. In fact, this dvd gives you exactly what you bought it for---olivia newton john, lots of her, from many different angles that lovingly frame her face so that you have plenty of time to remember all those reasons why you love her so much. Out of 19 video tracks on Volume 1, I can only recommend the first three from Livvy's Totally Hot album and the last 3 live cuts of her early 70s hits. In the middle are too many disappointments from her Physical album, one I have never been the least bit tempted to buy and, upon hearing some of the tracks I didn't know on this collection, am glad I didn't. Most of those songs and videos are quite boring, but what I really dislike is the sameness of all the Brian Grant directed videos in which she's got the worst hairstyle and wardrobe of her career. That nightclub setup only works well once for "Stranger's Touch" which, otherwise, is another bland Physical track. "Silvery Rain," as well as a disappointing version of "Hopelessly Devoted to You," is by far the worst video on the DVD. What's going on there, the fallout of a nuclear war?
Without argument, everything from Totally Hot works very well, and that's the Livvy most fans prefer to see and hear and, while it's nice to get a rare glimpse of ex-hubby Matt Lattanzi in "Landslide," there just isn't enough here for anyone who's not an avid Livvy fan to maintain their interest for long. If you only get one, get Volume 2 which is far superior to this one.

Olivia Newton-John: Video Gold 1 kicks off its anthology of 19 music videos with three shorts spun from Newton-John's 1979 Totally Hot album. "Deeper Than the Night," "A Little More Love," and "Totally Hot," all directed by Alan Metter, are buoyant mini-productions. The first two are anchored by scenes of Newton-John singing in the studio and posing for publicity shots, the last video more playful as the smashing blonde turns heads on the street and dances with a hunky fellow cast as a shutterbug. The next 13 shorts, amazingly, were originally included on the video collection Physical; 10 of those are tied to tracks on Newton-John's 1981 album of the same name. (Among the other three is a post-Grease take on Newton-John's hit from that movie, "Hopelessly Devoted to You." Unfortunately, it doesn't work as a sincere performance by a mature woman, as presented here. It's hard not to hear the song, instead, as intended: A schoolgirl's sigh from a nostalgic comedy.)
Of the Physical-based (the album, that is) material, the famous video of the same name still looks clever, with Newton-John playing a sleek, aerobics devotee inspiring a lot of chubby men to exercise by jumping on them, talking into their ears, etc. A surreal streak runs through a few shorts, especially "Recovery," in which the singer rides a horse through a desert, encounters a cage full of men in tuxedoes (what a warm shoot that must have been), and wanders through a painting. The final three performances, all live and all from the Olivia in Concert video, feature some of Newton-John's best material, including the country-flavored hits "Let Me Be There" and "If You Love Me, Let Me Know." --Tom Keogh
