DVD Review: Great series, not bad first installment...

Rob Bell is an excellent speaker, who is full of spiritual insights into questions which most people today are asking. His small group (we call ours home teams) material series which he has called "Nooma" after a phoenym of "pneuma" or spirit or breath as it is in the New Testament greek provides excellent material for small group Bible study. Each video is 11 minutes long, which is an ideal amount of time to present a subject for study. Each video also includes a complete set of small group discussion questions and appropriate verses to fill out your devotional time. I've found that with the material provided, you can easily have a devo which lasts an hour an a half, or cut it shorter as you see fit. This makes the series extremely flexible.
This episode, Rain, focuses on a personal experience by Rob Bell and his son as they find themselves alone, and isolated from their camp, and have to endure a long hike back during a rain storm. Rob relates this experience to our experience in life through the storms that we face. I found this an excellent analogy, and well fitting for discussion.
I only rate this four stars, since this episode is lacking in a lot of the strengths of this series, which include strong Biblical framework, and insight into first century culture. While this episode is certainly Biblically based, the Bible reflects the main story, rather than being the main story itself. This is fine, and really valid spiritually, but it is just not my preference.
I like it when your group can come up with their own personal stories, to reflect the Biblical truths. This study was a study of his personal experience almost, and how it relates to the Biblical truths, which somehow seems to dilute the message for me... I mean this only in terms of small group discussion, since this method seems to say, here is my experience, let me find others like it in the Bible, rather than trying to first understand someone's experience recorded in the Bible and then relating it to our own. And clearly, in this video, Rob finds his scriptural references by doing a search on the word "cry" or "cry out." This works, and is valid way of doing things, but I find it a bit more profound spiritually to start with the Bible first, then relate it to our experieces second. But that is just my preference. I've often used this (Rob's) approach to my own classes and lessons, so I can't really fault Rob too much.
I've seen a lot of Nooma's recently, but this is one of the two that I've actually used in a small group before and I have to say we had a really really really good discussion out of it. It clearly has a great message and a lot to say to people. It is not the best of his video's, but it is a great one, and it might be really relevant to your group. I highly recommend it.
