DVD Reviews of Night and Fog - Criterion CollectionDVD Review: Unsettling what we are capable of Summary: 5 StarsThis documentary reminds all that take the time to watch how truly cruel we all can be. I wanted to close my eyes and not take in the reality of the brutality that was practice in that time. The really sad fact is that we are no more enlightened now. Brutality occurs everywhere on this planet. So, take the time, open your heart and eyes and really let this movie flow thru you.
DVD Review: More of the same. Summary: 2 StarsI brought this dvd after reading the stellar reports of other reviewers on Amazon. I didn't find this video in any way extraordinary, especially given the expense ($30) versus length (30 minutes). For this, I expected to see something not commonly portrayed in films and other media.
DVD Review: Genocide and Myth Summary: 5 StarsBrilliant, Searing Depiction of the Holocaust. Jews ... GET OVER IT !!!! Highly Recommended !!!! 5 STARS !!!!!
DVD Review: Must to See Summary: 5 StarsA visual testimony to Holocaust is an epic work also it is of a lesser volume than Shoah: An Oral History of the Holocaust [All-Region].
Present sublimely, a kapo line is a rare occurrence in docos on a Jewry's tragedy if even traditionally omitted by Australian participants complimenting a feature.
Must to see.
DVD Review: One Amazing Documentary About Nazi Germany Summary: 5 StarsNacht und Nebel or Night and Fog was coined as a term by the Nazi's under direct order of the Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler. The idea: Any Opposition to the Reich would be taken, in secret as prisoners and transported to Germany for questioning. The families of these prisoners would be told nothing about the fate of their family members, not even who took them. The desired effect was to rule the rest by fear.
This documentary uses this term to clearly illustrate that idea as it shows you how concentration camps where turned into labor and death camps. This documentary is not meant for the faint of heart or the weak stomached. If you are a history lover or you have a specific interest in Nazi Germany, then I recommend this title along with Open City, Triumph of the Will, Metropolis, Olympia and The Power of Nightmares (this is not Nazi Germany but it illustrates another great example of ruling people using fear).
Description of Night and Fog - Criterion CollectionTen years after the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps, filmmaker Alain Resnais documented the abandoned grounds of Auschwitz. One of the first cinematic reflections on the horrors of the Holocaust, Night and Fog (Nuit et Brouillard) contrasts the stillness of the abandoned camps' quiet, empty buildings with haunting wartime footage. With Night and Fog, Resnais investigates the cyclical nature of man's violence toward man and presents the unsettling suggestion that such horrors could come again. Though only a short subject, this groundbreaking documentary remains one of the most influential and powerful explorations of the Holocaust ever made. Director Alain Resnais bluntly presents an indictment not only of the Nazis but of the world community, and the film is all the more remarkable for its harsh judgment considering the time in which it was made, less than a decade after the end of the war, when questions of responsibility were not yet being addressed. Juxtaposing archival clips from the concentration camps across Germany and Poland with the present-day denials of the camps' existence, the film seeks to once and for all expose the horrifying truth of the Final Solution, as well as to address the continuing anti-Semitism and bigotry that existed long after the war's end. An invaluable resource and testament to history, this film was a profound influence on all films to address issues of the Holocaust, from Judgment at Nuremberg and Shoah to Schindler's List. Night and Fog remains an essential and indispensable document of the 20th century. --Robert Lane
