DVD Reviews of Neon Genesis Evangelion - Platinum Collection 1 + Series Box

DVD Review: Overated,
Summary: 1 Stars

Please someone explain to me why the heck this crap is considered the best anime of all time. Is everyone on the earth crazy? Well apparently "Yes" if their willing to spend their money on this garbage.
Well, where to start? Oh I know, lets talk about how overated the plot is, and how it's basically just a giant ripoff. Yes thats right everyone... a ripoff, but i'll get to that later. Like I said, the plot to this show totally stinks and is not by any standards, al least from what I saw, really action packed controversial. The first two discs are basically just Shinji crying about how he dosn't want to fight the angels, which is unbelievably annoying, just like every other character in the series. Shinji, of all the horrible chracters in the show is by far the most. I don't care if he's complex, that dosn't make him likable. It's like te creators didn't know what to do with his personality so it's like "I know lets make this character all angsty and stuff and people will think he's compelling." Well im afraid that just dosn't cut it, just because a character is complex does not mean their a good character. Personality is what establishes a likable protagonist. Speaking of protagonists lets get down to the other ones in the series. Rei, well, Rei in a word is clich'ed. She's just your typical monotone character who talks in a low mysterious voice and is all mysterious and blah blah blah blah blah. People weve all seen this before, it's been done. Now we have Asuka, who, unlike Rei, does have a personality, but unfortunately it is an extremely annoying one. Please person who made this show, give us a a lead character that isn't completely unlikable. The same thing goes for all the other characters, Toji, that kid with the glasses, Misato( I think thats her name)everyone. All of them really really suck.
As the saying goes, a show is only as good as it's villain, and unfortunately for NGE there is no villain. Well, I guess some may consider Gendo Ikari the villain because of his relationship with Shinji, but Im talking about an actual villain villain, one that is trying to cause harm to the protaginst. All animes that are drama orientated have villians or some kind of bad guy, Inu Yasha has Naraku, Tigun has Knives, Cowboy Bebop has Vicious, etc. etc. but no NGE has giant floating diamonds. Beware the sharp pointy corners of the evil diamonds. The other angels are really lame also, totally uninspired and not to mention personality less, except for Kaoru(spelling error?).
Another thing that sucks about the seires is it's animation. I will admit it was good on he first disc, but the second disc. looked so bad it was pathetic. I almost burst out laughing when I saw the giant diamond moving on screen. Is that really the best they could think of? I understand that the angels are what humans could have been, I get that, and I think it's a cool concept, but it's bogged down with ugly and not to mention poorly drawn animation. They could have made the angels so much more complex in terms of artwok and personality ( if they had one to begin with). The animation on the characters movements also could have been done better. It is, most of the time, very still and lacks vibrance. Even the "End of Evangelion," had very unimpressive animation, though I do admit as far as content was concerned it outdid the series by alot.
Now lets get back to what I was talking about before, the fact that Neon Gnesis Evangelion is not as original as it seems. It's true people, this series copied so many things from the anime masterpiece that is Akira. For one thing those who didn't read the manga, Akira was trying to change the course of human evolution. And what was Gendo Ikari doing? Oh yes now I remember, the same exact freakin thing!!!! Ok, another simularity, the three old kids form Akira, what were they? Well, to put it simply they were the next form in human evolution, they were evolved humans. What are the Evangelion? Also, once again they are super evolved humans. There is also the sect Seele that's trying to take the EVA from nerv to use it for their own purposes. It that not simular to Akira? In the manga the government held possesion of Akira, and Kei's terrorist group along with Lady Miyako are trying to capture Akira, who is an eveolved human with extrodinary psychec abilitys. Maybe it's just me but there are quite a few simularitys. Normally this would'nt bother me so much but the fact that no one even notices that all of these points were borrowed is nuts. People have alot of nerve to call something the best anime of all when the creaters didn't even think of alot of the ideas themselves.
If theres one thing about this series that I must stress is the bad dubbing. The Dub is awful. If you must watch this series then watch it subtitled, which actually isn't all that great either. It's horribly acted and the voices are incredibly annoying.
Well overall, I don't think I will be recomending this series, I really think it's highly overated and does not deserve the praise it gets.
