DVD Reviews of Negima!? Spring and Summer Specials

DVD Review: A wasted opportunity
Summary: 2 Stars

OK folks, big diehard fans of Negima like myself were expecting big things from the OVAs and not like the DBZ movies were its in an alternate universe from the show but thats exactly what we get. First off its short, REAL short. You could have stretched both into 3 episode OVAs on 2-discs making the experience more enjoyable. Instead we have every character smashed in for cameos with no partciular roles except for the ones we're accustomed to: Negi, Asuna, Ayaka, Konoka, Setsuna, Yue and Nodoka. That's right only 7 out of 31 characters were actually used properly. The biggest problem is the 2 episodes clearly took turns bashing and favoring both Asuna and Nodoka which is fine for some but for me it was a wasted opportunity to progress the relationships with some of the characters, finalize a romance with Negi and Asuna/Nodoka or bridge a gap into the second season. If you like more of the same go buy it, but for others go watch on YouTube but not a recommended purchase.

DVD Review: Fun. Fun. Fun.
Summary: 5 Stars

Far better animation quality to the original series. It begins with the spring special (obviously) opening as Negi is deep in magic study nearly to midnight. Asuna is awakened and orders Negi to "get to bed." An arguement/fight happens between the two when Negi does the sneeze that strips Asuna naked. Next scene the entire class jets off to a tropical island for some fun in the sun. What I enjoyed most about both episodes were the bizarreness going on in the background.

Much more light-hearted and fun.

The opening credits for the spring special are fantastic as the girls exit the plane/skydive.

If you purchase this dvd, you won't regret it. A definite must for any anime collection.

DVD Review: great
Summary: 5 Stars

This collection features the spring and summer specials. Anyone who reads the mangas will recognize the first episode because it animates the time Negi and Asuna have their big fight there where she won't forgive him. Of course a few things are added to it as well since it is using the animation from the second series, like a chupacabra hunt and skydiving. The second episode was something completely new to me, where Nodoka and Negi are stuck together by a red thread and they have to make it through the day. Both episodes a pretty good I'd say, with some great scenes featuring Zazie being awesome, though these episodes rely heavily on the fan service.

Comes in a standard 15mm dvd case, trailers, and the audio plays in stereo. It has both the japanese and english dubs, but I wouldn't recommend anyone to watch in the english dub because in my opinion, it is pretty bad.

DVD Review: OH MY!
Summary: 5 Stars

This dvd is loaded with fan service... cleavage abounds as Negi interacts with his students in this hilarious addition to the Negima!? series... much more entertaining that the first season of the series.

DVD Review: SHAFT is superior
Summary: 4 Stars

Though this is only a 2 episode OVA, it is far superior to the original negima anime, in the animation department. It is done by the animation studio SHAFT, which really makes this OVA look great, beautiful, and caters a bit more to those who enjoy fan service, and they do it well. Its definitely awesome if you already like the Negima manga or anime.

Description of Negima!? Spring and Summer Specials

Two eye-catching episodes with TWICE the FAN SERVICE!!!!

The girls of class 2-C are up to their usual antics, and they've got poor Negi all kinds of hot and bothered! First Ayaka arranges a romantic getaway, determined to lift the little prof's spirits (and possibly something more!) But when the rest of the group finds out, their tete-a-tete turns into a no-holds-barred spring break! Later, a magic spell goes awry and Negi finds himself on a short leash - harnassed to Nodoka! And while it may be a dream come true for the soft-spoken bookworm, an impromptu trip to the spa ensures a hard-core nightmare for her sidekick.

Suck it up little man...let's get you soapy!

Two OVAs made in 2006 continue the hijinks of the harem comedy Negima! (2003), based on the manga by Ken Akamatsu, the creator of the popular Love, Hina. Ten-year-old Welsh wizard-in-training Negi Springfield continues teaching at the Mahora Academy--and remains the object of the entire student body's affection. In the Spring adventure, class rep Ayaka and the rest of the girls try to heal a quarrel between Negi and Asuna by taking a trip to a tropical island. Yuecchi messes up a spell in the Summer story, and ties Negi to the shy Nodoka by a red string. The string will stay on all through the day--the day the girls have decided to spend at a luxurious spa. Both episodes deliver plenty of fan service shots of cleavage, panties, and nudity. The sight of overly well-endowed teenaged girls fondling a prepubescent little boy has a decidedly unwholesome tone, but it's exactly what fans of Negima! want and expect. (Rated TV MA: suitable for ages 14 and older: nudity, risqu? and toilet humor, cartoon violence, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
