Blu-ray Review: Bathtub heroics

Ah, NAVY SEALS, a fond memory from teenage days, VHS tapes, hockey hair, chips, lots of soda and what not. Seeing it back then you'd probably tell your guys, "Oh, we HAVE to rent this! It's with that guy from the Terminator and that guy from Platoon!" That not having to be a good thing escaped you back in the day.
This movie now feels quite dated, not to mention perverse. It reminds you of how Sheen a little later would make Hot Shots and realise this was a joke on Top Gun, and with Part Deux, a joke on Rambo. NAVY SEALS can be forgiven not getting the joke, it can't be forgiven smelling like Reagans big boy diapers. The other day I saw a short documentary on the excellent Dirty Harry box set (blu-ray), discussing wether or not Dirty Harry is fascist. That reminded me of how the fascist word (which is thrown around too much these days), was thrown at Starship Troopers a few years back. But that was a film with tongue in cheek, and was done so intentionally. So, most people with a fleeting knowledge should have got it. This film NAVY SEALS, is NOT tongue in cheek. If a tongue came near a cheek here, it would be to demonstrate some latent male homophobia, or perhaps to demonstrate something lude to women.
That leads me to my main critizism of this this film now. It feels constructed for our benefit, like a fascist society NAVY recruitment film. All the jokes, all the action are done with robotic presission, with no room for afterthought, or gut feeling.
Made in an era where muslim arabs were still mostly something that got beat up by Israelis, and had to be watched closely so the didn't ally themselves with the evil Soviets, much have changed. Now the muslim arabs ARE the enemy to a large extent, partly because of geopolitics, because british and french accented bad guys are starting to seem silly, but mostly because some of them have handed Hollywood the enemy they couldn't have dreamt up in their worst nighmares, NAVY SEALS can be seen a historic by-product, and as such, is best seen with any knowledge of the World in general turned down to a minimum.
If you do that, you'll have to contend with Charlie Sheens blood thirsty goofball, the baffling conducts of Bichael Biehns character, and a lot of fun cameradery set to poodle haired 80s hard rock in a odly Golden Girls like enviroment.

Navy SEALs are a top antiterrorist unit that goes anywhere (SEa, Air, or Land) to fight for and protect the American Way of Life. When a SEAL team rescues American hostages in the Middle East, they discover the terrorists have a warehouse of deadly Stinger missles. Rather than risking his entire team, Lt. Curran (Michael Biehn) orders his men to leave without destroying the Stingers. But when civilian aircraft start getting shot down--and when one of Curran's men is killed by terrorists--the SEALs make it their personal business to track down and destroy the deadly missles--and the fanatics who want to use them. Made in the Top Gun mold, Navy SEALS features stock characters (including Charlie Sheen's loose cannon) and at times seems like a recruiting film for the SEAL program. But the action sequences are well done (especially the final battle in war-torn Beirut) and the special effects and cinematography are first-rate. There's also a certain gung-ho, testosterone-driven, adrenaline-junky sensibility that seems appropriate to the sort of impossible missions SEALs are asked to do.
