Blu-ray Reviews of Natural Born Killers (Unrated Director's Cut) [Blu-ray]Blu-ray Review: Gratuitously violent love story and social commentary Summary: 5 Stars
I could start this review by just dropping Quentin Tarantino and Oliver Stone's names, which should sell the movie to nearly everyone; but doing so would not do this masterpiece justice.
Oliver Stone has a reputation of pushing the envelope in terms of content but also manages to sneak in subtle messages regarding society and popular culture in his films. He also captures the rich characters that have been elegantly written with great detail. Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis are excellent as Micky and Mallory, two young lovers who embark on a no-holds-barred killing spree, all the while being pursued by law enforcement as well as the media. As the film progresses, Micky and Mallory become unlikely heroes as their brutal actions are sensationalized by the media.
While it is difficult to refer to Micky and Mallory as protagonists in Natural Born Killers because they are obviously sociopaths, it is difficult not to root for them at some points because of their uncompromising love for each other.
Two other characters worth mentioning are those portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. and Tommy Lee Jones who play a reporter following Mickey and Mallory and a prison warden, respectively. Downey Jr.'s character does an excellent job of showing his true talent as an actor. His character personifies the media, and how it can sensationalize even the most brutal, psychotic criminals and make them celebrities. Jones' character plays the opposite role, in a futile pursuit of justice.
Natural Born Killers is in the same vein as True Romance (not a surprise considering they were both written Quentin Tarantino). Its an action movie, a love story, and a satirical view of human nature and good vs evil. The film contains strong violence, sexual material, and graphic language. It is not appropriate for small children, and those who are easily offended. However, I think that Natural Born Killers is a highly underrated film. I feel as though the title, as well as the content have caused this movie to be passed over as a mindless excuse for gratuitous violence. It may take a few times watching the film from beginning to end to truly appreciate the nuances and complexities of this film, but in the end it is well worth it.
In closing, of all the versions of this film that are available, the Unrated Directors Cut on Blu Ray is by far the best version. The special features are listed in the product description, but they are all worth owning. But this movie, keep it out of reach of children, and enjoy a great piece of film-making!

Description of Natural Born Killers (Unrated Director's Cut) [Blu-ray]The story of a husband and wife who are serial killers involved in a cross country killing spree that elevates them from fugitives into media celebrities. Oliver Stone would like to have the last word on America's media culture of voyeurism and violence, but whatever he's trying to say in this grisly, unconventional movie comes across terribly garbled. Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis play traveling serial killers who become television celebrities when a Geraldo-like personality (Robert Downey Jr.) turns their madness into the biggest story in the country. Stone extensively rewrote an original script by Quentin Tarantino, and he employs a mosaic of different film stocks, video, and pop pastiches to create a sense of blurred lines between visual phenomena. (The background on Lewis's character's life as an abused child, for instance, is presented as a sitcom starring Rodney Dangerfield.) But the result of these experiments is a pompous, even amateurish effort at grasping the reins of a real-life national debate. One almost wants to tell Stone to sit down and raise his hand next time if he thinks he has something to say. The controversial director would like Natural Born Killers to be nothing less than a monumental achievement, but it's one of the emptier entries in his filmography. --Tom Keogh
