DVD Reviews of National Geographic - Volcano!

DVD Review: Volcanoes, Benign or active?
Summary: 5 Stars

Maurice Krafft was quoted: "I am never afraid, because I have seen so much eruptions in 23 years, that, uh [chuckles], even if I die tomorrow, I don't care." Krafft, his wife, and 41 others were killed later that day by a pyroclastic flow.

Beauty, power, horror, amazement, magnificence; volcanoes are something we take for granted as gentle giants below the Earth's surface, but we soon forget that they are dangerous as well. The National Geographic movie, Volcano:Nature's Inferno shows just that. NatGeo presents the information like they do with all their documentaries, perfect, precise, and interesting. They add the scenes we want to see and the voice overs by the actors we want to hear. As well as adding a colossal soundtrack that adds perfectly to what's going on in the film.

The first explosion on the volcano leaves a first hand account from a survivor about his narrow escape. Having just witnessed an explosion, and being in the wrong place at the wrong time, decides he needs to get out of there, as fast as possible. But this isn't fast enough and is pelted my rocks that have been flying through the air. Most cause little to no real damage, but there is one major one that breaks his leg. As if this isn't bad enough, he gets started on fire at the same time because of the lava flows and hot temperature. He then drags himself to safety over the sharp, jagged rocks to safety. Only to find some of his fellow scientists are dead. There are people missing and everything where they worked is somehow destroyed. The eruption lasts only 15 minutes but has hours until rescue teams are available to start searching. There are 3 hikers and 6 volcanologists still missing. After flying 48 hours to get to Arizona, he undergoes 16 surgeries to fix his leg as well as a gapping hole left in his skull.

With nearly 30 volcanologists that have died in eruptions, it's hard to imagine wanting to do this as a job.

It's even harder to imagine that this was one of my childhood aspirations. It seemed like such a cool job. You get to travel to amazing places, do research and write papers that inform millions of people. Teach lectures on what you learned and hopefully make money enjoying something you do. Now, I realize how crazy it would have been to follow that dream.

Hawaii's volcanoes have become the epicenter for volcanic studies. There has been vast amounts of knowledge gained from the last century. Even since 1890, Kilawaea? has been the most active volcano on Earth. This is a major reason the Islands have been produced. The gentle balance between being benign and active, is a teeter-totter but it has worked out well for Hawaii. Thomas Jacker? created the studies that we still use today. and also founded the Hawaii Volcano Observatory.

Living in the aftermath of Sikurijima? is terrible. There have been written accounts of this volcanoes eruption dating back to the 8th century, but as of lately, they have been very good at prediction. But the ash that follows even the littlest eruption needs a clean up crew. Not only to 'dust off' the falling ash, but when it rains, it gets very dangerous. The piles of ash flow from the Volcanoes tops and creates flash floods of "mud" and ruins homes and roads. Once per year, they have an anniversary celebration for the 1914 eruption by having an evacuation drill.

The truth of that matter is that; no matter how much we think we may know about volcanoes, we know nothing. A volcano can erupt at any given moment for any given reason. Or perhaps, no reason at all. Some of the deadliest volcanic eruptions have been due to the fact that we classified the volcano as "extinct" when we knew nothing to better our judgements. A civilization can vanish in a matter of seconds due to the fury that a volcano may bring. (e.g. San Torini, Atlantis, Pompay). As the film said earlier; the best way to predict the future is to learn from the past.

Overall, National Geographic: Volcano; Nature's Inferno, is a phenomenal film. I give NatGeo two thumbs up for presenting the material in such a way that it remains interesting throughout the entire contents all while leaving me wanting more. It's sad that horror movies can get dozens of sequels, but such films like this that keep you glued to the edge of your seat, rarely even get shown in full length.
