DVD Reviews of My Name Is Bruce

DVD Review: Funny spoof!
Summary: 4 Stars

Bruce Campbell, veteran of countless 'less than stellar' movies has done it again. He makes up for what the movie lacks, by his presence. They not be great, but they are entertaining. After all, aren't movies supposed to be entertaining?! Here, he pokes some serious fun at himself, and seems to have fun doing it. Just for fun, I highly recommend a viewing.

DVD Review: Enjoyable diversion
Summary: 3 Stars

First, I'm a big Bruce Campbell fan, having enjoyed him in the "Evil Dead" trilogy, "Brisco County" and "Burn Notice," among many others notable and not-so-notable. Second, Campbell's book, "If Chins Could Kill," was great, providing juicy low-budget movie-production tidbits along with Campbellian humor. That being said, let's get to the movie.

The movie was entertaining and served, basically, as a vehicle through which to view Bruce doing his usual thing: delivering snappy lines, making funny faces, being rejected by women, making a low-budget movie. All good stuff.

All in all, though, the movie is just okay, enjoyable for one-time viewing on a late night. I mean, they have him living in a trailer in the movie and any fan of Bruce Campbell's KNOWS that THAT isn't true, which really shouldn't matter but, somehow, it does, thereby undermining the credibility of the storyline (not that it's that credible to begin with, mind you). It's a decent romp, but not one of Bruce's best efforts by a longshot.

Also, the ending could have been much better, e.g. filled with corny Campbell lines and romantic pleas.

Definitely worth a watch, especially for the Campbell fan, but set your expectations low.

DVD Review: Dear Bruce Campbell I love you.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is not a serious movie by all means, so if you have the intent to watch it and critique don't bother. If you dont like Bruce Campbell, dont bother. If you cant laugh at corney and often stupid jokes or watch amateur acting dont bother. But if your like me and love all of the above than by all means buy or rent this film!

Admittingly the first time I saw this movie I had been drinking but one sober night not too long ago I picked it out of my movie shelf and decided to see why I had been in stitches laughing oh so long ago.

Living out of his trailer alcoholic and dead beat actor Bruce Campbell is a mess. Working on a horrible movie which fans will immediately realize is quite similar to a real film, hes mean hes full of himself and fairly unlikeable (if of course he wasn't Bruce Campbell!). In a small town not far away the residents are being killed by a Chinese god, of what I will not say. Fan boy Jeff decides to find his hero and have him save the town. Little be known to him his hero isn't quite what the movies cracked him up to be.

Highly entertaining, at points a bit ridiculous this movie is well worth a watch one night, sober, buzzed, or drunk your choice. The end made me laugh however I can see it not being for everyone it was unexpected though, I gotta give it that.

Gather around the Bruce Campbell fans and enjoy.

DVD Review: Bruce Cambell Humor
Summary: 5 Stars

Yeah the movie is corny, kinda lame, but what do you expect from Bruce Campbell. He makes fun of himself throughout the whole movie, even having the locals misspell his name on a poster. Yeah he makes fun of the chinese or what a reviewer called racist. But most of us orientals just smile looking up from our bean curd and keep on trucking. I would think the French would be bad mothing this movie as well as the white gys in the backwoods for the way they were shown in this movie. It is part of the way Bruce Campbell's movies are. Entertaining if you like Bruce Campbell movies but if you hate them well what can I say?

DVD Review: Who thought this was a good idea?
Summary: 1 Stars

My Name Is Bruce would be mildly entertaining if it weren't also blatantly racist. Ted Raimi participates in some of the most offensive yellowface I've seen in years as the character Wing. Mickey Rooney's portrayal of Mr. Yunioshi in Breakfast At Tiffany's is almost tame by comparison. It's a shame, because I would otherwise have liked to support this movie.

Description of My Name Is Bruce

Something evil is stirring in the small mining town of Gold Lick, and it's not happy. Guan-di, the Chinese protector of the dead with a strange affinity for bean curd, has been awakened by reckless teenagers, and now his bloody crusade to wipe out the town's entire population can only be stopped by one man - Bruce Campbell (the guy who starred in all three Evil Dead movies and Bubba Ho-tep), B-move star and deadbeat ex-husband extraordinaire, who's recruited to be their unwitting savior. Thinking the whole scenario's a publicity prank, Bruce is distracted from his mission by a hot mom and fan boys aplenty-- but when our hero has to face off against a dark force more fearsome than a Hollywood agent, the laughs and screams start flying!

Cult film and TV star Bruce Campbell (Burn Notice) lampoons his own B-movie legacy with My Name is Bruce, an agreeably goofy horror-comedy which pits him--well, a version of him, anyway--against a malevolent Asian spirit in order to save a die-hard fan. Campbell also directed Bruce, and brings a loose, kitchen-sink vibe to the proceedings, which has teenager and die-hard Bruce Campbell fan Jeff (Taylor Sharp) kidnap his idol in order to save his small town from an ancient Chinese demon. Unfortunately, the movie Bruce Campbell is a broken-down, booze-swilling reprobate who lacks even an ounce of the insouciant charm of his screen persona in Evil Dead 2 or the Hercules series, and proves woefully inadequate in dispelling the monster. But as films ranging from Cat Ballou and My Favorite Year to Galaxy Quest and Three Amigos! have proven, the unwavering belief of a fan can bring out the hero in even the worst heel, and Bruce rises to the occasion in the picture's final third. Obviously, Bruce is slated towards fans of Campbell's eccentric screen c.v., and aficionados will undoubtedly appreciate the endless slew of nods to his previous films, as well as cameos by many of his co-stars, including Ted Raimi in multiple roles (one of which is a Chinese gentleman that gives Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's a run for his money in the stereotype department). Campbell himself remains the movie's chief selling point; his knack for physical humor (read: self-abuse) and pulpy line readings have lost none of their charm, which does much to override some of the flick's flotilla of stale gags. Campbell's sense of humor is also given free reign on the commentary track, which he shares with producer Mike Richardson; the DVD, which comes with a 24-page comic book adaptation from Dark Horse, also includes an amusing making-of featurette, as well as a spoofy tell-all mockumentary on the "real" Bruce Campbell, and a trailer for the atrocious film-within-a-film, Cavealien 2. -- Paul Gaita
