DVD Reviews of My Date with DrewDVD Review: HEARTWARMING DOCUMENTARY Summary: 5 StarsThis documentary is very original, heartwarming and creative. All true, aspiring film maker Brian Herzlinger has a huge crush on Drew Barrymore and decides to take the winnings he got from a game show, use it as a budget, and gives himself 30 days to get a date with Drew.
A project such as this could be very tacky but the sincerity of his quest carries this whole film. Brian is a charming, regular guy and the lengths to which he goes to work through people who know Drew is often hilarious. As the film goes on you get so caught up in his venture you can't help but imagine yourself working to make a dream come true.
You must watch through this whole thing to encounter the last 30 minutes that will put you on an emotional roller coaster. I actually cried with this documentary !! The payoff at the end will fill your heart.
Original, daring, creative and filled with heart this documentary is a must for anyone who has a dream that could possibly be within reach but fear holds you back. It also shows there is still pure honest goodness in this world and to find moments of happiness are worth the journey.
Kudos to Brian.
DVD Review: Brave and Possibly Brilliant Summary: 5 StarsFirst time director Brian Herzlinger fell for Drew Barrymore like the rest of us with one notable difference: Brian was a little kid at the time, like Drew, and his kid crush lingered.
If the backstory to My Date With Drew is true, grown up Brian Herzlinger won a grand as a game show contestant and got a grand idea as well. He used his grand for a 30-day refundable down payment on a camera that he couldn't afford and started filming a quest to meet his childhood love and ask her on a date.
The fact that Brian Herzlinger was just a guy from New Jersey and Drew Barrymore was a famous actress from one of the most famous families of actors and actresses on the planet slowed him down at first. When you are America's Sweetheart you can't make yourself too accessible and Ms. Barrymore wisely keeps a degree of separation between herself and most of the rest of us, no matter how much we love her.
Here's where Brian Herzlinger's grand idea flares into a supernova as the documentary shifts to explore the degrees of separation between the young filmmaker and his muse. Time is running out on the camera and the director is grabbing at straws but it seems that everyone he meets who has met or worked with Barrymore knows someone who might get him closer to the star. We follow him every step of the way and eventually his obsession becomes ours and the suspense becomes overwhelming.
In a day and age where everything costs millions, a truly independent feature film is rare and usually from the heart. This is one of those.
DVD Review: Adorable! Summary: 5 StarsThis is such a feel-good movie! Leaves you with a smile on your face and insipired to take risks in your life. You fall in love with Brian as you see him take this journey. Not to mention how great Drew Barrymore is! If anyone has any misconceptions or negative ideas about her, this movie will definitely change your mind! I love it and highly recommend it!
DVD Review: Movie poster says this is "brilliant"... and that's just sad Summary: 2 StarsI picked up on this movie at the point where the guy is having a "mock date" with a girl who is very like Drew Barrymore in the way she looks, acts, and talks. The "mock date" is videotaped of course and his friends dissect every little thing he does, including the way he cuts his steak. I could not help thinking what a ridiculous waste of time this was on my part, but alas there was truly nothing else on so on I watched (as I too am a fan of Drew Barrymore). I can't remember what satellite channel this was on (Showtime or Starz, or something), but I can't imagine what about this documentary would warrant them carrying it (and it's often on my channel directory, so they show it a lot). The guy is basically just your average hairy geek with too much time on his hands and nothing better to do with his $1k in game-show winnings (his parents financially support his overindulgence) than to "buy" a camcorder from Circuit City and waste an hour of our lives stalking Drew Barrymore in attempt to score a date with her within 30 days (so of course he can return the camcorder to Circuit City and not be out any money). Even more ridiculous than the group critique of the date was the guy having a very dramatic argument with his girlfriend on his cell phone, while he's watching himself in the mirror the whole time. The ONLY thing that redeems this show is the last 10 minutes or so when Drew actually does come on-scene. She was so kind, friendly, and gracious to the guy and wasn't the slightest bit pretentious at all. She truly is a gem and I can't understand why every guy in the world doesn't have a crush on her, and why every woman doesn't want to be her best friend. I can't imagine why anyone would willingly shell out for this DVD but I have to admit it was kind of cool to see such a nerdy, awkward guy gamble everything to accomplish a dream, no matter how silly it may seem to the rest of us.
DVD Review: Quite Lovely Summary: 5 StarsBrian Herzlinger has had a crush on Drew Barrimore since he was nine years old and at twenty-seven, he's ready to do something about it: armed with $1,100 and a video camera he must return to Circuit City in 30 days, he decides to try to get a date with her--and document the process.
The obstacles are obvious: Herzlinger doesn't know Drew Barrimore, he's broke, not particularly cute and she is, well, a movie star who also happens to be in a "very committed relationship."
Brian is surprisingly candid and realistic about his situation and his own flaws--which makes the viewer root for him. His adventures and misadventures are often hilarious and the end is sweet and funny. This is a good movie about going in search of your dreams, no matter the obstacles.
Description of My Date with DrewThere are Dreamers and there are Believers...and there are those like Brian Herzinger, the Dream-Believers. Since the second grade, Brian has had a crush on Drew Barrymore and now 20 years later he wants to fulfill his dream by asking her on a date. Clever and often funny, My Date with Drew is a kind of slapdash excuse for a documentary feature, albeit one with a few surprises. A 27-year-old aspiring filmmaker, Brian Herzlinger, wins $1,100 on a game show (where the winning answer happened to be "Drew Barrymore"), and decides to use it to make a film about his aspiration to ask Barrymore out on a date. Enlisting a few eager and bemused producers and directors as allies, Herzlinger goes through a self-improvement campaign--exercising, finding out what Barrymore likes--while also interviewing people who know her, including actor Eric Roberts and Charlie's Angels co-screenwriter John August. The tricky part, of course, is not giving anyone the impression that Herzlinger is just a sophisticated stalker, especially when he's busy wrangling invitations to celebrity parties so he can get near the object of his lifelong crush. The film runs a little low on steam in its second half, and the suggestion that the movie is really about the beautiful pursuit of a worthwhile dream, and not just a first-feature gimmick, gets a little precious. But My Date with Drew is certainly worth seeing for its conclusion. --Tom Keogh
