DVD Reviews of My Baby Can Talk - First Signs

DVD Review: Why bother?
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this DVD in preparation for having our first baby to be able to sign with him for the period when he is capable of signing but not speaking. The idea was to allow him to communicate with his parents about his needs and thereby ease frustration.

The DVD has two sections. One is intended for viewing by the parent and the child and contains the 20 signs to learn. I had hoped to find signs that relate to the basic needs and surroundings of a toddler. The signs turned out to be book, car, drink, eat, go, milk, more, shoes and no less than 12 different animals.

Some of the signs are useful. "Book" might be used for "tell me a story from the book". But only one food item is named (milk). There is no mention of sleeping or having a bath, activities that it would be nice for my child to communicate about. Signs related to bodily functions are also absent; at least the execution of the signs could be shown in the "parents only" tutorial section.

I am puzzled at the choice to include the signs for both "bird" and "duck". As the producers point out, small children may not have the motor skills to reproduce the signs accurately. The signs for "bird" and "duck" are almost identical.

After I had seen the DVD with my wife, I wanted to try out what I had learned. We were in the swimming pool and I wanted to ask her if she wanted to swim more. I signed "more", but realized that the DVD hadn't dealt with how you phrase something as a question. For a non-ASL speaker, it is not immediately obvious how to get across the difference between [encouraging her to swim] "more!" and "more?". I imagine that you will use appropriate facial expressions, but this is in no way implicit; American Indian Sign Language begins a question with a special manual sign that serves as a "question indicator". Knowing how ASL users indicate a question would improve the usefulness of the signs between me and my wife and eventually the exposure our child will get to the signs. The ability to communicate with ASL speakers is another potential side benefit I was hoping for.

The tutorial should also deal with how you answer a question in the affirmative/negative. Does ASL have "yes" and "no", or do you answer by repeating part of the question as you do in latin? How do you indicate the person, i.e. "do you want more?" vs. "can I have more?".

The producers suggest that you "watch the video with your baby at least 4 times a week" until he/she has has learned the signs of interest to him/her. The American Academy of Pediatrics states on its website: "Until more research is done about the effects of TV on very young children, the AAP does not recommend television for children age 2 or younger. For older children, the Academy recommends no more than 1 to 2 hours per day of educational, nonviolent programs". Personally, I believe signs are best learned if used with and in front of the child in an everyday context by people who love the child - preferably without the aid of a TV. The need for TV images only arises because so many of the signs on the DVD symbolize items not physically present in most children's environment (bear, mouse, dinosaur) that they have to be shown on a screen.

Even so, some 95% of the video is taken up by footage of the things that the signs symbolize, not the signs themselves. In my opinion, learning might be more efficient if the signs were repeated more frequently, given a toddler's short attention span.

Bottom line: I will look for a program directed at the parents rather than at the child, with emphasis on everyday items and activities rather than on conversational topics. Is it worth taking my child (and me) through hours of TV so he will be able to sign the names of animals until he learns to speak?
