DVD Reviews of Music in Review

DVD Review: Lacking Insightful Commentary
Summary: 3 Stars

I have viewed many of the "Music In Review" titles and found it be a rather uneven series, with this one about the Eagles somewhere in the mediocre middle.

It starts off with the first self titled album and goes up to "Hotel California", focusing mostly on the hit songs. I enjoyed following the band's development chronologically. But why was "The Long Run" or later songs, such as "Seven Bridges Road", not included? But really the biggest problem is with the very uninspired commentary from a bunch of unknown music biz guys with nothing very insightful to say. In contrast, the "Music In Review" title for Bruce Springsteen features commentary from Robert Christgau and other top notch music critics. But the guys on here often misinterpret the songs and seem to have very little of interest to say about the band the general. For big fans of the Eagles it still might be worth it for the music and archival footage. But certainly not nearly as good as it could have been.

DVD Review: Its okay..
Summary: 2 Stars

If I had paid more attention to what this actually was I would not have purchased it. Its a documentary of the Eagles, not a music DVD. You get to hear background music, but thats it. I for one, was very disappointed.

DVD Review: For "Junkies" only.... TWO STARS!!! (error on rating)
Summary: 3 Stars

OOOPS - hit the wrong button. I gave it 2 STARS!!!!!!
Firstly - please be aware that I am an all time Eagles junkie from the 70's. I grew up with Hotel Calfornia sitting almost permenantly on my turntable (yes in the days of vinyl) even ousting the likes of Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and Led Zep....
I actually rated the DVD 2 (but stuffed up the rating and now you can't change it on the system - DOH)... It actually only went to 2 because I liked the book, even though the photos were not particularly plentiful or clear (in some instances). Personally, I'd probably just keep the book (which is quite interesting) and ignore the DVD.
The documentary is like watching that British program 'Grumpy Old Men', as that is exactly what it is - a bunch of grumpy old men commenting on the Eagles - albums number 1-5 only (no mention of The Long Run or anything else here - the book is far more comprehensive). Commentary is OK if you like that sort of thing. There is archival footage and the good news is they seem to have been able to clean it up a bit compared to the stuff you can acquire around the ether; which goes to show that there is HUGE potential for someone to grab all the footage, clean it up and issue "offical" versions of the archival footage. (Geeze, if Jimmy Page can do it for Led Zep, why not the Eagles?)
OK - the bad news!!!! None of the clips are shown in their entirity - so you get a teaser and that's it! Grrrrrr.....
So, if you are a total junkie and have to own Eagles stuff, then buy it for the book (but it's pretty expensive).
If you are new to the Eagles or just want one DVD of them then I would recommend the well recorded and well performed 'Hell Freezes Over' concert - mainly because Don Felder was still with the band and it's worth having for that alone. Sadly he'd left by the time of the 'Farewell 1' in Melbourne 2004 so the version of HC on that DVD is kinda lame - I was at the Sydney concert and FW1 was the same set list (and yes HC wasn't the best). The main problem with HFO is there is only an acoustic version of Hotel California on that DVD (see my other reviews...) and the best ever 'electric' version of HC, featuring Felder playing the big SG doubleneck, is only avail on a bootleg concert recorded in New Zealand (1995) - no such clip is available commercially.
******
SO IN SUMMARY: Do NOT buy this unless you are a total die hard Eagles junkie.
******
Now please - if someone is reading this far down - can somebody get hold of all that great archival footage, clean it up best they can and issue an "official" double disc of all the cool stuff they did in the 70's!!! I'd buy it. (I bought the Led Zep effort and it is simply awesome - 5 stars!)
Maybe if the Eagles want to settle up their lawsuits "Get Over it" and make up with Felder, then doing that might just be the ticket to pay their legal bills..... oh well!

DVD Review: 72 Pages?
Summary: 3 Stars

The book in the illustration above looks bigger than only 72 pages. Is it??
