DVD Reviews of Mr. Deeds (Full Screen Special Edition)DVD Review: Much Better Than the Previews Showed Summary: 4 Stars
Adam Sandler's movies contain a strange mixture of wholesome sweetness and insane antics. Mr. Deeds is no exception. It is SO hilarious. My husband and I laughed non-stop. I love this movie! More than just a comedy, it has a classic quality that contains the charm of the original 1936 Mr. Deeds. Gary Cooper played Sandler's role. I only recently saw this movie because the trailers and commercials made it look infantile. All the previews showed were a butler getting hit with golf balls, and the same butler whaling on Sandler's foot with a fireplace poker. Thankfully, this movie is very good. Usually, they put the best parts of a film in the trailer. This time, it seemed like they put the worst parts. But, even these seemingly bad parts were comedy classics once seen in the context of the movie.
The story is about Longfellow Deeds (Sandler), a pizza parlor owner who lives in a town so backwards, they are surely inbred. But Mandrake Falls is as nice a place as you want to be. The town is loving and supportive, and accepting of all. Deeds dreams of getting one of his greeting card verses published by Hallmark.
Deed's life changes when his multi-billionare uncle Preston Blake (whom Deeds never met and didn't know existed) passes away. Deeds inherits his company by "genetic lottery." The crafty and unscrupulous Chuck Cedar (the O.C.'s Peter Gallagher) tries to wheedle Deed's title away, while hardened tabloid reporter Babe Bennett (Winona Ryder) goes undercover as an innocent small-town girl named Pam Dawson. Bennet is under orders to make Deeds tabloid fodder. But, Babe finds that her feelings for Deeds soon betray her, even as her disguises and lies do not.
All the supporting characters are great, especially John Tuturro as Spanish butler Emilio. Ryder brings sincerity and charm to the caustic reporter who is used to living only for herself.
It is also great to see a film filmed IN NEW YORK instead of Vancouver, Canada, where most Hollywood movies are made because of cheaper costs.
If you like cats, there are some special treats in the movie for you.
Copious extras include three making-of featurettes, titled "From Mandrake Falls to Manhattan," "Spare No Expense," and "Clothes Make the Man." These include commentary from Sandler, Gallagher, Ryder, Tuturro, the director, and the costume designer. These show how much care went into making the film, and how the director wanted to have "echoes" of the 1936 film.
Other extras include some of Deed's greeting cards: some for Passover, Easter, Valentine's Day, and St. Paddy's Day. If you insert the disc in your computer, you can access the website that will allow you to send these animated cards, read by Adam Sandler, to your friends and family! Fun, and very unique!
There are some funny deleted scenes that should have just been left in the film - except the one where the guy puts a slice of pizza down his pants. Not funny. There is a funny, but short, outake reel.

Description of Mr. Deeds (Full Screen Special Edition)Adam sandler plays longfellow deeds a great-nephew to one of the worlds richest men who happens to die at the beginning of the movie. Deeds inherits 40 billion dollars but since hes from a small unknown town in new hampshire he does not see the need to have so much money. Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 09/20/2005 Starring: Adam Sandler Winona Ryder Run time: 97 minutes Rating: Pg13 Director: Steven Brill Following the flop of Little Nicky, Adam Sandler returned to safe territory in Mr. Deeds... and made Nicky look inspired by comparison. A loose remake of Frank Capra's 1936 classic Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, this dumbed-down version finds Sandler in the Gary Cooper role, inheriting a vast fortune and a corporate empire, foiling a greedy executive (Peter Gallagher), and winning the heart of an undercover reporter (Winona Ryder) who's been mocking his small-town naiveté in print while falling for his goodhearted sincerity. It's fun enough to satisfy Sandler's loyal fans--and John Turturro's a hoot as Deeds's foot-fetishist butler--but the subtleties of Capra are lost on Sandler, director Steven Brill, and writer Tim Herlihy. While Gary Cooper portrayed a rube who was savvy about big-city cynicism, Sandler's an amiable goofball with a heart of gold and an empty skull. You can admire him, and parts of the movie (including Steve Buscemi's unbilled cameo), but you have to work harder to get there. --Jeff Shannon
