DVD Reviews of Mozart - Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) / Haitink, Finley, Hagley, Fleming, Glyndebourne Festival OperaDVD Review: Mozart's Marriage of Figaro Summary: 5 StarsExcellent DVD of an excellent production of The Marriage of Figaro. Just like I was in the theater.
DVD Review: An essential addition to any opera-lover's library Summary: 5 StarsOther reviewers have pointed out some obvious weaknesses in this production: rather strange sets, odd use of "highlights" and dimming, and occasional uneven sound quality. But I soon forgot these in the sheer delight of watching a masterful presentation of one of my favorite operas. While all the principals are good, Gerald Finley is an especially memorable Figaro, and Alison Hagley is, quite simply, perfect for the role: a superb voice, tremendous acting ability (with a wonderfully expressive face), and young and sexy - ideal for the part. The DVD would be worth getting just for her performance. Incidentally, one reviewer criticized the DVD for not being widescreen, but actually this production was originally shot for television (i.e., in the 4:3 format), and so there are no "lost edges".
DVD Review: Simple sets allow the music and singing to stand out Summary: 4 StarsA traditional staging, with simple yet attractive sets, allow the singers to shine in this production which innaugurated the Glyndebourne Festival's renovated opera house. The music was appropriately light and airy, EXCEPT, and this is why I did not give this version a fifth star, in Figaro's marriage scene. I feel that Maestro Haitink could have brought the volume up and sustained it a little longer on a celebratory tone. I couldn't help but compare it with the same scene in the movie "Amadeus", which to me, is the way it should look and sound.
DVD Review: One of the best Nozzes with a couple of caveats... Summary: 4 StarsOverall, very appealing. Bright, sharp visuals; full crisp sound; mostly good cast. Weaknesses, surprisingly, is Rene Fleming at the time who was about 30 pounds overweight and who's voice as yet had no dynamics. Also, staging a bit crude and minimalist. Also, not widescreen. So, better than many but not quite satisfying.
DVD Review: Cos? fan .... molti Summary: 3 StarsLa qualit? sonora ? proprio mediocre.
Description of Mozart - Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) / Haitink, Finley, Hagley, Fleming, Glyndebourne Festival OperaStephen Medcalf's superb production opened on the 60th anniversary of the first performance at Glyndebourne, inaugurating the new opera house. "One listened enthralled, as Haitink, Hagley and Finley lifted a loving, carefully prepared performance to greatness." OPERA Mozart's comedy presents a scenario where society overcomes its differences - social, sexual, generational - through the exercise of the humane values of mutual understanding, respect and forgiveness. Mozart's immortal adaptation of Beaumarchais's satirical tale has always been a Glyndebourne staple, so it was appropriate that this delightfully traditional production of Le Nozze di Figaro was chosen to reopen their refurbished opera house in May 1994. John Gunter's set design is airy and uncluttered, leaving the actors plenty of breathing space, while director Stephen Medcalf likewise allows the characters to speak (and sing) for themselves. Gerald Finley's Figaro and Alison Hagley's Susanna make a charming central pairing; Ren?e Fleming and Andreas Schmidt are a formidable aristocratic duo, while Marie-Ange Todorovitch fills Cherubino's trousers with pleasing playfulness. Bernard Haitink and the London Philharmonic sparkle, as of course they should. Unfussily filmed, this is as close to the real thing as you're likely to get without a Glyndebourne season ticket. --Mark Walker
