DVD Reviews of More Yoga for the Rest of Us, with Peggy CappyDVD Review: She talks and gets interrupted way too much in this DVD... Summary: 2 StarsFirst of all she talks too much, then she stops all the time to correct her students. I always thought when they do any kind of exercise video, that it is practiced so they all are in sink. Instead here she is constantly stopping to talk and correct them and makes you loose your whole concentration. The exercises may be good but too many interruptions in between them. I only try this DVD twice on the third one I was so frustrated I had to turn it off.
DVD Review: Great Followup to Yoga for the Rest of Us Summary: 5 StarsAre you looking for gentle yoga DVD? Are you interested in beginning a yoga practice but hesitant about heading off to your local yoga studio? Are you under the misconception that yoga is only for the young, fit, and flexible?
More Yoga for the Rest of Us by Peggy Cappy is a DVD that can help. If you think you are too old, too out of shape, or not flexible enough to try yoga, the students in this DVD prove otherwise.
Cappy, a New Hampshire based yoga teacher with over 20 years experience offers gentle senior yoga classes where many of the participants are 70+. The DVD includes a "Meet Peggy Cappy" section that features shots of her classes and several interviews with her enthusiastic students who explain why they do yoga and all the benefits it provides.
Peggy explains that yoga can help everybody and anybody who does it feel better physically and mentally. It's an opinion I share so I am always on the lookout for DVDs that can deliver a yoga program that is accessible to the average person regardless of age or current fitness level.
More Yoga for the Rest of Us is a follow up to Cappy's original DVD, Yoga for the Rest of Us, and is divided into two 20 - 25 minute sections that can be performed separately or together - Floor Exercises and Standing Poses.
In More Yoga for the Rest of Us, Peggy Cappy leads 4 of her students of varying ages and abilities through the program in a calm, sincere, and nurturing way. The pacing is slow and controlled. Variations and modifications are demonstrated for most of the poses so that students of any level can participate safely.
The Floor Exercises section begins with breathing exercises to calm the body and steady the mind. It provides a good transition out of the busyness of your day, and into your yoga practice. Additional floor exercises include pelvic tilts, knee hugs, leg stretches and strengtheners, reclining pigeon pose to stretch the hips, reclining spinal twist for the back, reclining cobblers pose to stretch the inner thighs and several gentle bridge variations.
The Standing Poses section, is dedicated to standing poses that are designed to build leg strength and improve balance. The poses are all demonstrated with several modifications and variations to accommodate different levels of ability. Those who are less steady use a chair for support.
The DVD concludes with a few gentle compensation poses for your back and a nice long guided relaxation - the restorative reward for your earlier yoga practice.
I like that Cappy explains the benefits of the various poses and provides detailed alignment instructions to keep her students safe. I also like that these are real yoga students of varying ages and abilities, not models or yoga experts.
If you are looking for a gentle yoga DVD that can help you increase your flexibility, strength and balance, More Yoga for the Rest of Us is worth a closer look.
Highly Recommended
DVD Review: First saw on PBS Summary: 4 StarsThought this would be a good thing for elderly Mom & I to do together, in the comfort of one's own home. Very easy to follow along. Peggy really does make it easy AND enjoyable.
DVD Review: So so Summary: 2 StarsThere are not many DVDs truly for people over 50 or 70 that are applicable to this population and not just the upper 90%. This was OK, but could have been much better. I am still looking for some that can be followed like an audio tape (good descriptions because in positions you cannot look at a DVD), are at beginner level and slow enough for this population.
DVD Review: MORE YOGA FOR THE REST OF US Summary: 5 StarsThis is an excellent Yoga DVD. When you have completed your workout using this DVD you will feel so refreshed and ready to go for the day. Peggy Cappy
is an excellent yoga teacher.

More Yoga for the Rest of Us is presented in three easy-to-do segments: * Part One gives your body a wonderful stretch-benefiting legs, hips, and the back * Part Two is a series of standing poses that increases all-important leg strength and balance * Part Three is a new and different guided relaxation exercise that conveys an integral part of yoga's benefits: reducing stress and quieting the mind Special Bonus Feature: Travel to Peterborough, New Hampshire to meet Peggy Cappy and some of her students, adults of all ages who suffer from a range of ailments and who have benefited greatly from their yoga practice. Peggy's unique approach to yoga has adults finding new energy and flexibility, and feeling better than they dreamed possible. Instructor Peggy Cappy's More Yoga for the Rest of Us takes up where the first volume (released in 2002) left off, with a gentle, easy-to-follow series of yoga poses recommended for novices, those who are older and less active, or anyone dealing with injuries or recovering from illness. Unlike so many yoga video programs, which emphasize the athletic aspects of the practice (certainly a part of yoga, but hardly the most important part) and feature beautiful young people with perfect bodies, Cappy takes a "do what you can do" approach, stressing yoga's noncompetitive side and suggesting simply that the more often you try it, the better you're likely to feel; there's no New Age music, no exotic locations or groovy outfits, and the students who demonstrate the poses with her include a couple of senior citizens. The practice itself consists of a series of floor poses (including hamstring and hip openers, twists, and the bridge, a mild backbend), followed by standing stretches, forward bends, the crucial downward-facing dog asana, a couple of reasonably challenging balancing poses like eagle and dancer's, and a lengthy final relaxation. Cappy's instruction is good (although she falls a bit short when it comes to explaining specifically how to use the breath), multiple variations are demonstrated (including many using a chair, which makes them considerably easier), and many poses are repeated. The 20-minute infomercial at the end is basically extraneous, as the virtues of More Yoga for the Rest of Us speak for themselves. --Sam Graham
