DVD Reviews of Miss PotterDVD Review: Gifted Children should see this movie Summary: 5 StarsI am a recently retired elementary school teacher. I feel bright, gifted children would get a lot out of this movie. Beatrix Potter did not "fit then norm" and so it is so very often the case of gifted children. They actually often "beat up on themselves" for being different than the average person/child. I think they will identify with Beatrix's early giftedness in drawing and her intense devotion to it and her insistence to follow it. So often gifted children are trying to be "pushed" into the world's mold of average, almost as Beatrix was, and they do NOT fit into the average mold, quite the opposite , their mindS think " out of the box", very different from most people and yet it is from these gifted children and people that we get our great discoveries in all fields. Think of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and many others who made discoveries that have greatly added to the quality of our lives. They were the persistent gifted ones who refused to be pushed by the world into the average mold ! Who would you like to do brain surgery on your brain tumor ? Personally, I'd like to have those "out of the box thinkers" be encouraged and thus they might become that brain surgeon. They are born with giftedness, let us encourage it and GIVE THEM WINGS TO FLY :)
DVD Review: Miss Potter Summary: 5 StarsThis movie is, by far, on my list of favorites! Delightfully done, and even heart-tugging. My grandchildren even enjoyed it, so you see it IS a family hit.
I hope when it is watched, everyone takes the time to see the video at the end of the song "When You Taught Me How to Dance". It too may bring tears to your eyes, but also a smile because of its tenderness. You will just want to hear it again and again.
DVD Review: WONDERFUL STORY about a WONDERFUL LADY Summary: 5 StarsMiss Potter is a delightful film about children's author and illustrator Beatrix Potter, played by Renee Zellweger. Beatrix decides she will not marry, and instead will pursue a career as an author and illustrator of children's books - a very bold and unusual thing in Victorian England in the late 1800's. She receives scant encouragement in her pursuit until the Warne brothers agree to publish her first book, The Tale Of Peter Rabbit, and assign it to their youngest brother, Norman, in the hope he will fail and thereby give up the idea of joining them in the family business. Played by Ewan McGregor (Star Wars, Moulin Rouge, Down With Love, Big Fish), Norman becomes enchanted with Miss Potter and her book, as does his sister, Millie, played by Emily Watson (Gosford Park, The Waterhorse). The three become great friends, and eventually Norman and Beatrix fall in love.
Meanwhile, Miss Potter's books are selling like hot cakes, and she eventually finds herself a very wealthy woman - much to the surprise of her mother, who has never understood her or her interest in art - and can now make her own way in the world - again, highly unusual for the time. She begins buying up estates in the Lake District of England - at first to settle there, but later to preserve the area as a farming district. Eventually, she donates 4,000 acres of the most prime real estate to the British people as a national trust. This is one of the most gorgeous films you will ever see, and a wonderful story about a wonderful lady. It is full of imagination, cleverness and childhood magic. Director Chris Noonan, writer Richard Maltby, Jr., and the entire production crew should be commended for creating a cinematic gem.

DVD Review: Excellent movie Summary: 5 StarsWe have throughly enjoyed the movie "Miss Potter". It spured our interest in Beatrix Potter and we have since ordered four books about her and her stories.
Description of Miss Potter(Drama) The story of Beatrix Potter, the author of the beloved and best-selling children's book, "The Tale of Peter Rabbit", and her struggle for love, happiness and success. Miss Potter walks that fine line between charming and cloying with pleasing sure-footedness. Apple-cheeked Renee Zellweger (Bridget Jones' Diary) once again slips into a British accent to play writer/illustrator Beatrix Potter, the creator of Peter Rabbit. Potter, born into wealth, fought the disapproval of her high society mother to do something as crass as publish a book...and to fall in love with her publisher, Norman Warne (Ewan McGregor, previously teamed with Zellweger in Down With Love). Unfortunately, their love runs into something worse than upper-class stuffiness. Miss Potter skips through Potter's life a bit too briskly at times, but Zellweger's thankfully restrained performance, McGregor's infinite charm, and some beautiful shots of the English landscape keep the movie grounded and engaging. Also featuring a crackling supporting performance by Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves) as Warne's sister Millie. --Bret Fetzer
