DVD Reviews of Mirage of Blaze CollectionDVD Review: Mirage of Blaze Collection Summary: 5 StarsI like it because it had a lot about the Feudal Era of Japan and I loved the story.
Some people may find it a bit disturbing because part of it is a love story where
two men are involved and the ova its pretty strong in that respect but I just looked at it as a wonderful story regardles but I really would had liked a more
complete ending. I had rented at Netflix I thought I would like to see it again
So I bought and I am glad because I catch things that I missed the first time around
DVD Review: A Story for Today Summary: 5 StarsI agree with you, C. Vasquez. The story is dark and sad. People
are still obsessing over each other and hurting one another.
I do feel the character of Naoe has done the things you mention.
However, remember the statement of Nagahide, "You drove him to it,
and you don't remember what a sinful person you really are."
Nagahide, encapulates the relationship of master and servant,
when he makes this statement to Lord Kagetora.
Don't forget that Kagetora was used by everyone and strikes out
the last scene at the lake is heart breaking. Kagetora says
that "After all this time, do I have the right to think about him"
We do not know what Kagetora has done to Naoe.
DVD Review: Beautiful Animation but Sad Story Summary: 4 StarsI had this animation but sold it back because everytime I found myself watching it I would get upset. Why? well, because of the 2 main characters.
First, it is a well animated story and the past events that seem to repeat themselves to the present are dark and there is some mystery left to be told.
Secondly, some may think this yoai and I believe it comes up when searched but I don't think it is about that if you really watch what's going on. I don't like yaoi and never been interested in it. Yes, one of the main male characters is obsessed for the other but I don't think the other character feels or felt that way at all from what I gather. Takaya I believe was raped by Naoe while forcebly inhabiting a female's (his girlfriend or wife doesnt really tell you, you just get a glimpse of it) body when his inhabited male body is struck down by Naoe (his right hand man so to speak in feudal Japan) because of his obsession over Takaya. I believe Takaya's spirit had no choice but to jump bodies and the only one there was the girl. Takaya hates him for this subconsciously not knowing exactly in the present why and struggles with his feelings of a strong need to be protected by a father figure (he sees this in Naoe) and the feeling of hatred both times Naoe tries to assault him. In his new body Takaya has buried deep in his psyche the pain of what transpired some time in the past and the consequent hatred he developed towards Naoe.
I do like the end of the OVA where Takaya tells Naoe that if he could ever defeat him, well, he can have him. He says it with confidence and anger and you realize then that Naoe will never be as powerful as Takaya and that will never happen.
It is this whole forcing yourself on someone and the rape that makes me angry when I watch it so I decided to sell it back. Obsession is a horrible thing when you hurt people and here Takaya over many lifetimes has sufferred not only when he was alive as a youngster being raped by men when he was given to another clan as a hostage by his own family but also as a spirit inhabiting human bodies that are not his own. I feel strongly for him and understand why his psyche supressed any knowledge of who he was.
It is a beautiful looking animation and I love the story between the clans and the politics but hated the feeling it gave me when Naoe contiued to obsess and hurt Takaya. For this I gave it a 4 stars.
DVD Review: Great Anime, disks seem cheap though Summary: 5 StarsIf you liked Mirage of Blaze and don't have any of the disks then this maybe the best way to get them in one package. There are the four disks with the original 13 episodes and the Rebel OVA. The packaging isn't the greatest nor are the disks, the disks seem less sturdy to me. For those not familiar with the story, Mirage of Blaze is a very in-depth story. It is almost too in-depth for the length of the series and the OVA. They are based on a long series of novels that as of this date have never been translated into English. Which is more the pity because I feel a lot of the story was left out. Basically, there were past wars and they are still being fought in the present by either vengeful spirits being awakened and by Possessors whom are either the awakers or the ones trying to exorcise those spirits. There is no true end to the events and if you don't like that it may not be best for you to buy but maybe rent them. I loved the series and the OVA even though I dislike stories that don't end (as of yet anyway). It has some action but a lot of talk especially about who's doing what because of the past and what they are doing now. This maybe boring for some who do like mostly action. A Word of Warning: there is some back and forth emotional stuff between two of the main characters (guys) so if you are squeamish then take this into account. Nothing really physical happens in the 13 episodes (though one scene almost is), but there is one incident in the OVA that some may have a problem with, though they don't actual do it (and non-con). Reviewers for the separate disks and the OVA mention this. I wouldn't say this would be a reason not to watch just for to be aware of. Also you may want to shop around I got it for less elsewhere.
Description of Mirage of Blaze CollectionTakaya Oogi is a street smart high school student, dedicated to protecting his best friend Yuzuru Narita. The two are wrapped up in an ancient war of darkness and tragedy, begun during Japan s chaotic Warring States Period. The psychic powers of long ago find new life in the hearts of Takaya and Yuzuru, but rival clansmen seek to destroy them.
