DVD Reviews of Mind Meld - Secrets Behind the Voyage of a Lifetime

DVD Review: Entertaining
Summary: 4 Stars

I am a big fan of William Shatner and love his passion when he speaks. I enjoyed watching Shatner & Nimoy and really learned alot about them & their lives before, during & after Star Trek.
I also bought this for my cousin for Christmas, he's a Trekkie, & he enjoyed it very much.

DVD Review: Listen closely during Chapter 11 (52:47)
Summary: 5 Stars

Firstly, this is a great video. A warm, nostalgic and touching conversation between two men who stumbled into being pop culture icons. I'm a major TOS (the original series) and movies 1-6 (with emphasis on 2, 4, 6) fan and like these two men from what I've seen of them in interviews. Despite Shatner's reputation as a prima donna and preening male diva, I can't help but be fond of him. Of course, I've never met him, worked with him, or been married to him.

At the point on the DVD mentioned in the subject field, listen closely. In Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, the Enterprise saves the day by using equipment that "catalogs gaseous anomalies." One such anomaly is heard, and it clearly comes from Shatner. You can tell by his facial expression and how the ever diplomatic Nimoy plays it cool, despite the fact a gaseous anomaly is wafting his way. This is a great moment. Let's just say -- it's a blast.

DVD Review: Deserves 100 stars!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I had no idea what this was when it popped up in my Amazon recommendations. I had never heard of it anywhere before. I was afraid it was some kind of low-budget and poor quality profile cobbled together from faded and scratchy archive footage by some no-name outfit out to make a quick buck. There are many of those kinds of unauthorized and completely worthless so-called documentaries being sold these days on the topic of various musical stars and groups.

But man was I wrong! This disc here is the real deal. An in-depth interview made by Shatner and Nimoy themselves especially for the fans. This is one of those rare purchases that far, far exceeded my wildest expectations and I feel was worth far more than its modest purchase price.

In fact just last year I paid mega-bucks to see Shatner and Nimoy in person at a convention, and while it was wonderful to actually be in their illustrious presence, I have to say the long, probing and detailed conversation contained on this disc was actually far more satisfying than the amusing but limited banter they served up for the fans at the con.

The two take turns interviewing each other and discussing their lives, not skirting difficult issues like alcoholism, marriage break-ups and even their sometimes strained relationship with other Star Trek cast members. It seems that realizing their mortality (both actors are now in their 70s), they have made this as a kind of legacy to set the record straight on many things.

I really loved the unhurried pace and pensive tone of the interview, which allowed for a very deep discussion which I found more satisfying than any interview with them I had ever seen before. This was truly the kind of interview with them I had always wanted to see!

And best of all, when the interview is over, we are taken right inside Leonard Nimoy's house and you even get to see where he keeps his Spock ears!

If you are not a Star Trek fan, this disc will probably mean nothing to you. But to the original series Star Trek fan, in my opinion this disc is absolutely priceless and I give it my highest recommendation possible. By all means get this!! You won't regret it.

Summary: 5 Stars

Excellent DVD. It's surprsing that after 40 plus years of knowing each other their are still things they don't know about each other. You can easily tell that Nimoy and Shatner have alot of love, warmth and friendship between each other. They discuss many topics: Star Trek (of course), personal feelings, their own deaths, and alot more. Very insightful.

DVD Review: Insightful and entertaining discussion between Shatner and Nimoy
Summary: 4 Stars

Two actors born 4 days and 250 miles apart boldly followed similar lifepaths and this DVD has them in a more or less spontaneous discussion mainly about TOS. They have the rapport of a 35 year friendship and discuss insights into their personal and professional lives before, during, and since TOS. You definitely come away with more respect for these two talented brilliant actors.

Description of Mind Meld - Secrets Behind the Voyage of a Lifetime

Mind Meld: Secrets Behind the Voyage of a Lifetime is an unprecedented 75-minute examination of the impact the Star Trek experience has had on the franchise's most celebrated participants: William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. These two stars have arguably embodied the brightest icons in the sci-fi universe; Shatner as passionate Captain James T. Kirk, and Nimoy as logical-minded, half Vulcan Mr. Spock. Now, in an unprecedented candid conversation at Nimoy's Beverly Hills home, these two icons of popular culture share with each other, and the viewers, the behind-the-scenes adventures of one of the greatest franchises in entertainment history.

They discuss:
The Phenomenon: How Star Trek meaningfully changed their careers, their very lives.
The Creative Battles: The pressures of making a landmark weekly series. The challenges of bringing back Star Trek as a movie franchise.
The Original Crew: Rivalries, jealousies and conflicts between the original cast and creators.
The Personal Impact: Pressures on their families and friends. Struggles with personal demons and addictions.
The Final Frontiers: Lives reviewed. Facing death. Remembering their Star Trek co-star DeForest Kelley (Dr. McCoy) and the legacies both men hope to leave behind.

Shot in beautiful high-definition video, this lush production features rare personal photographs that span the careers of the two men, as well as a visit into Nimoy's study filled with memorabilia of the incredible voyage they shared. Most of all, these two passionate actors reveal the incredible bond that was the cornerstone of their success; the trust, the friendship, and the ability to consistently challenge each other to boldly go where neither man has gone before. 75 minutes.

Tailored to the most hard-core Star Trek fans, Mind Meld gets you up close and personal with the stars of the original television series. Its premise? Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner sitting together and having a quiet, earthy chat about old times. There isn't much new information about the show--though old cast resentments are addressed--but viewers learn a great deal about the personal lives of everyone's favorite spacemen. The two discuss the pressures of filming a weekly show and the difficulties of maintaining one's dignity as an actor while wearing pointy ears. The personalities of both men shine through and it becomes obvious why they were cast as they were; Nimoy really is more thoughtful and reserved, while Shatner is extroverted and showy. The best part of Mind Meld is witnessing the genuine fondness the two men share for each other. It's clear that they really were (and are) best friends, even when the cameras stopped rolling. --Ali Davis
