DVD Reviews of Millions

DVD Review: Surpising !
Summary: 5 Stars

Millions is a wonderful movie that presents a little boy's faith in God and how his faith affects others. I watched it first without the grandkids, and while it was sweet, I thought it might be a bit over their heads. The movie is set in Manchester England and the accents are very heavy. I was afraid the kids would have a hard time understanding, but they caught on faster than I did. The cinematography was unusual but seemed to contribute to the children's enjoyment. All watched the entire movie with rapt attention. (this a really saying something, because they normally don't sit still that long). At the end they where all sitting there with mouths open in astonishment.
They are 7, 10 and 12. All loved it and wanted to watch it two more times that weekend! The next week they wanted to watch it again. It is clean and full of valuable lessons. It made real how the saints help us. Recommended especially for Orthodox and Roman Catholic families.
Mom's should watch first because of the scary villain guy and to tiny parts that may cause concern.

DVD Review: Great for the Family
Summary: 4 Stars

Millions is a great family film for people maybe 6 and up to watch, because some of the scenes are a bit scary. It starts with the family about to move to a new house that is packed with memories of their dead mother. It is a bit confusing in the beginning about whether the mom is dead or not because of the way the two boys use the fact on other people. One day as Damian (Alex Etel) is in his cardboard lookout a huge sports bag of money bounces in from the sky and onto his painstakingly made lookout. It's an overstuffed bag filled with money. Damian assumes it is a gift from God and is eager to start giving it out to poor people, as he is slightly obsessed with saints. He will not listen to his sensible yet slightly selfish brother Anthony (Lewis McGibbon) who wants to use it to invest it in real estate or chance it to Euros and accidently lets it slip to an intimidating-looking stranger that he has loads of money. It sends them twirling through a chase where the owner of the money demands the money back.

The actors are very good, and I love the saints that he regularly talks to that really seem to do miracles for him (saying his line in the nativity play when he runs away, rebuilding his cardboard lookout). Damian is very quiet and withdrawn, and Alex is amazing at giving people a look of the view of the children who withdraw into their own worlds. It is very funny at parts, especially to see people in the movie pasting money on the walls. The movie draws you in very quickly and almost everything is very easy to understand. It has a quite strange beginning though. All in all, I would recommend you see it.

DVD Review: Boyle and Film Magic
Summary: 5 Stars

Alex Eitel's character Damian would also appreciate the two young girls in Eve and the Fire Horse, a Julia Kwan film. Both of the younger siblings wrestle with brilliant images of how they perceive the religious figures that are terribly important to each of them. Each has to cope with the added pressures of an older sibling giving them skewed interpretations of both faith and life. Danny Boyle succeeded brilliantly to combine such universally familiar family experience with hilarious, unexpected obstacles. Boyle captured a small miracle ending when Damian's wish to bring water to a distant African village is joyfully rendered. Great film.

DVD Review: Millions - A Charming Movie For The Kid In You
Summary: 4 Stars

Millions is a very charming movie about a young boy and his brother who happen to stumble upon something many of us have dreamed about at one point or another: a bag of cash that *literally* falls from the sky. The question is, what does one do with such good fortune? And when you discover that the source of this blessing is not very divine, how does that change the way you deal with this situation.

Part of the challenge of rating a movie like this is that it is so charming and direct that those of us who are cynical can't help but to be blinded by the *Hollywood* happy-ending feel good nature of this movie. This may be the perfect litmus test for cynicism. But if you take the movie at face value, it's actually a fairly well-made movie with an uplifting message. Certainly, the message is not a very realistic one, and there are some small plot elements that require suspension of disbelief. But even if you view this as an allegorical tale, if you let your inner kid view this movie you will be able to accept those leaps of faith.

Employing child actors is a practice that might be over-used in films of the past 10 years. In a sense, the honest commitment of child actors seems to earn directors a free pass. In this case, the work of both the actors and director Danny Boyle deserve all the praise they have been given. Whatever holes exist in the story itself are filled by the acting and direction. And the fact is that this movie is very charming! Alex Etel in particular really shines on the screen. Perhaps they edited out the bad takes, but the camera really seems to love this kid!

I think this movie is perfect for everybody: kids and families will have a lot of fun watching this wholesome take on an unsavory adventure, and even old jaded loners like me can enjoy this. Those who are unable to make out the English and Scottish accents can simply turn on the English subtitles. So I don't think that should stop people from buying this to view with their kids.

This is a very nice film. It does have a story that requires you to suspend disbelief, and it does move a little slowly at times. It's not perfect, but then again what movie is. I recommend this movie and I hope you give it a rental to see if you might want to buy it.

Enjoy.

DVD Review: Danny Boyle is all that and a bag of chips
Summary: 4 Stars

I don't know how I actually came to watch Danny Boyle's, "Millions," but I sure am glad it came my way. Before I realized he was the director, as I watched this film, I felt the cinematography, bright colors, and wonderful performances by children were similar to "Slumdog Millionaire," which I saw last month. Although I'm also a fan of "Trainspotting," I didn't even connect Mr. Boyle to all three films until a few minutes ago.

This story is lovely, inspiring, surprising and educational. Each time the character Damian met a Saint, I learned a little about religion and was amazed at the delivery by this innocent young boy with his lovely and stoic face. The older brother, Anthony was equally as excellent, showing the determination and strength of the character, but not detracting from his sometimes obscured brotherly love. The Saints were perfect delusions and the Latter-Day "Saints" were not. The plot inspires discussion and reminds me of the time my sister and I found money outside of a department store and we were fortunate enough to receive it two weeks after we turned it in to security. Some people thought we should have kept it, but I turned it in without a second's hesitation. I don't know if I'd do that now as an adult, particularly since well over a hundred dollars can buy a lot of goods off Amazon if you're a seasoned shopper. Or I could donate it to charity. Or I could keep half and donate half.

Directing child actors is not an easy task and Danny Boyle excels time and again. I would recommend this film for children as well as adults, followed by a "what if" conversation.

Description of Millions

From legendary director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) comes ?a family film of limitless imagination and surprising joy!? (Chicago Sun-Times)

It?s holiday season and seven-year-old Damian believes he?s received a divine gift from above when a suitcase filled with cash literally falls out of the sky. Damian is anxious to share the wealth with those less fortunate while his fun-loving brother Anthony would rather spend it like there?s no tomorrow! But when the loot turns out to be stolen, both the boys? plans are put to the test?with heartwarming and hilarious results.

Millions wears its heart on its sleeve, and it wears it well. Two boys, still grieving the death of their mother, find themselves the unwitting benefactors of a bag of bank robbery loot in the week before the United Kingdom switches its official currency to the Euro. What's a kid to do? Director Danny Boyle takes a simple premise and, with the help of Frank Cottrell Boyce's sweet, smart script, finds something special to say about the hopes everyone has for the future of a changing world. Brothers Anthony and Damian have vastly different agendas for the stash, and then have to deal not only with the money's original thief but with the disarming woman who seems to be stealing their widowed father. The film is full of quirks that work--seven-year-old Damian (an endearing Alex Etel) has private conversations with a collection of eclectic religious saints--and a technically spirited way of commingling both the scary realities and fanciful imaginings of young minds. --Steve Wiecking
