DVD Reviews of Metalocalypse - Season One

DVD Review: I'll pay this, but metal is actually funner in real life than this.
Summary: 4 Stars

As a rivethead of good standing among my brethren, even if I also listen to other musical forms as well, I must say that the news of the existence of this series was welcome relief to me. At last I could look forward to seeing my beloved metal having all sorts of barbs flung at it by those best qualified to do so - metalheads themselves. After all my friends lame attempts at whining about the genre - while they listened intently to either no music at all or music they gleaned from their parents collections from the 60's and 70's - I was heartened to think how a genre so obviously needing insiders to lampoon it would show up in an animated comedy series.

And in many respects this is a successful series. The humour is often of an overall nature, not always specifically of a nature only insiders could understand and in fact I was surprised at how few in jokes there were in the series. This perplexed me as why bother making the series about metal if you aren't going to put a mountain of jibes about the form or insider references in the series. Why not make the series about Dire Straits? Well OK, perhaps that was going too far. But my point is further borne out by the chuckles that ensue whenever an inside joke is put in - I mean Snakes `n' Barrels? Dr Rockso? The names of black metal bands being used for food stores etc?

Furthermore, why on earth would you have the majority of the band hail from the US when for most of the last two decades US hard rock and metal has been pretty dire. Not to mention the two `international' members of the band have accents that take you a few episodes to decipher and Murderface has a mumbling style that also takes a while to get used to. Not great for connectivity chaps.

Of course where this series picks up points is for attempting this at all. And the way in which the guys themselves are often the butt of the jokes is a nice touch and their utter self absorption is a nice comment on the reality TV generation for starters. Not to mention I find it amusing that some really nice riffs have been written for the bands' songs and CD's have been put out of the tunes from the series. Not THAT is funny. Another good point about this series is that there are a few central themes that mean there is a steady narrative throughout. And while character development isn't really the appropriate word the characters do unveil more of themselves to the audience as the series goes on and we find some reasons for their calamitous personality faults.

All of this is also not to mention the simple fact that by doing this as an animation series all sorts of fantasy elements are able to be put into proceedings and this gives the show a totally additional facet than something like Spinal Tap and it means the creators of the series can be far more brutal in their violence and blood letting as these things come to be viewed as cartoon deaths etc as per a Tom & Jerry cartoon.

If you are into hard rock and metal then you really need to acquaint yourself with this series and as an insider I get enough out of it to give it a four star review. But if you aren't into the music the humour isn't of a standard good enough to get this baby home.

DVD Review: Brutal, hilarious, and awesome in every way.
Summary: 5 Stars

This show is pure genius. It takes one of my favorite things in the world, that being heavy metal music, and then combines it with some truly great humor. I still laugh at these episodes even though I've seen them all countless times. The music is all created by the show creator, Brendon Small, and is surprisingly not bad. The characters are all based off of metal stereotypes and various prominent figures in the genre. The episodes are short but there's plenty of them. The second season is great as well, but it just doesn't quite stack up to the awesomeness that was this first season.

DVD Review: Why you should buy Metalocalypse season one.
Summary: 5 Stars

Originally I didn't like this show, I didn't care about the characters, and wanted to change the channel every time it came on. I am willing to admit I was wrong, very wrong. The balances of all the jokes, which ultimately make the show amazing, are really understood when you watch the episodes in a row on DVD. You get to know the characters, which are actually very witty and funny in a weird day to day basis. And each character is so complex, it really is an animated show which was done well. For example, Toki is a favorite of mine and the episode when their families come to visit made me love him even more. He was so traumatized by his parents that he sat in silence for the whole episode. I also enjoy hearing all those additional "s's" at the end of each word because its so innocent and endearing. Another great episode is when they are in a supermarket but they call it a food library. Or Pickles drunk and mumbling to himself for 3 minutes straight until his revelation about rock 'n roll fries. Or four death metal guys learning the blues and talking the devil out of buying their souls because of the legal amendments they insist on making. How could you not want to own those episodes?

DVD Review: TV isn't all bad.
Summary: 5 Stars

As much as I'd like to agree with Jak's (guy who gave a one-star rating) assertion that adult swim shows are crap (plenty but not all are), the singular mind of Brendon Small (who does most of the music and writing for the show himself) is an intelligent, Berklee College of Music graduate who knew exactly what he was doing when he created this show. This show IS NOT anywhere near the same circle as adult swim's pathetic Tim and Eric Awesome Show or The Mighty Boosh or Assy McGee - don't you dare lump it in with "original" adult swim crap. This show, while pleasing the hell out of metal fans with its surprisingly accurate "black metal" sound and irreverent humor, dares to go against the grain. Not with stupidity, that's too easy. It does so with unusual animation, brutal depictions of death and dismemberment, and scathing social commentary. The absurd humor is a bonus. I feel Jak wrote his review after looking at (not watching) a few minutes of scattered episodes while flipping through channels or talking on the phone. I'm beginning my own stopmo series, on a completely unrelated set of ideas, and shows like Metalocalypse inspire me to acheive. Here's a critical hit: the music in this show is better and more metal than many metal bands today who take themselves SERIOUSLY. I'm a die-hard fan of true metal, I can pass that judgement. You get the show or you don't, like Gryphon said. Regardless, don't let crude animation and heavy music scare you away. This show is a gem.

DVD Review: New DVD casing broke on first day
Summary: 4 Stars

The first time I watched disc 2, the DVD holding part broke and I am worried about the disc getting scratched. DVD companies need to make better quality disc holder, or at least release shows on blu-ray, as those cases are flawless.
DVD has good extras, audio quality is significantly better than TV, but video quality is about the same.
