DVD Review: Is this a joke?

Am I supposed to be laughing? Is this a joke? Ever since I opened the case and put the DVD in it has felt like I'm on Candid Camera (or "Punked" for those who are too young to remember CC). Actually it's more like I'm on that show called the Boiling Point (where unsuspecting people are put through some ridiculous treatment to see how long they'll last before snapping.)
OK, so you put the DVD in, wait for the main menu, and when it comes up you press play. But then nothing happens. Why? Because pressing play doesn't start the DVD, it brings up your DVD player's internal "Chapter Selection" process where you have to use your remote to input the chapter number you want to watch (in other words, no remote = no watching the DVD). So just when you think this DVD can't get any more amateur than that the show begins. But wait, it's not time for the show yet because first you have to sit through what looks like a power point presentation on why this DVD is good based on how children learn and what research has shown . . . (basically they are advertising their product within the product you've already bought). So now your child is probably starting to get really antsy and aggravated that nothing interesting is happening (mine did). Finally the show begins and that's when the real amateur hour begins.
You see the outline of a black "a" on a white background and after several seconds a voice says "a." You wait several more seconds (which in toddler-time is the equivalent of minutes) and the voice repeats "a." And on and on this goes until you reach "A." No music, no colorful backgrounds, nothing to keep a toddler's interest. My 17 month old daughter watched (barely) until the letter "b" and then shoved the "Laurie Berkner Band" DVD into my hand and cried until I gave in and switched to her choice. I've made several attempts to watch this with her and have had the same results each time.
Before you start thinking "well maybe this guy's daughter has a low attention span" I should inform you that she doesn't. She's very analytical and patient as long as she has a reason to be so. A white television screen with the black outline of a letter is not going to keep the attention of any child at that age. And if your child is 3+ it should already be at a higher level than what this DVD offers.
I'm hoping to find a similar DVD that's made by a company that knows something (anything) about making instructional DVDs. This one is made in such amateur fashion that I wouldn't be surprised to find out the creator is burning copies of this with his home PC after he spent 10 minutes making it with some low level software he probably downloaded for free off the internet.
Interestingly though they have another DVD out called "Meet the Colors" and while it's similar in some aspects at least someone was bright enough to include some music and animation in it.
If you want your kids to learn their letters you can spend a lot less money and buy foam bathtub letters (they come in several colors) and work with those. I already have and was looking for an extra supplement to that and all the other methods I use to teach my daughter.
