DVD Review: Frank Langella's stellar performance is better than the movie itself
Summary: 3 Stars
"Masters of the Universe" is based on the 1980's toyline and animated series commonly known as "He-Man," or more formally "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe." Both the toyline and the series are more fun than this dull mess. Practically the only redeeming feature of this film is a powerful performance by Frank Langella("Frost/Nixon") as the villain Skeletor.
Dolph Lundgren is suitably musclebound as He-Man, but it is a part which does require more overall acting ability than Mr. Lundgren shows here, and the scripts for the animated series are more intriguing than the story for this movie. Involving an interplanetary key, an appropriate amount of heroes and villains, and two Earth kids the movie's screenplay is nothing we haven't seen before and gets old quickly.
Also featuring Meg Foster in the movie's other best performance as Evil-Lyn, Billy Barty, and a young Courtney Cox, "Masters of the Universe" just isn't very good. Done in the right creative spirit, the material could be revitalized along the lines of the comic book movie craze.
